Lossiemouth Emerges as Leading Contender for Champion Hurdle
Paddy Brennan has firmly positioned Lossiemouth as the front-runner for the Champion Hurdle following her impressive victory in the Hatton’s Grace race against Teahupoo last weekend. During episode three of the Unbridled podcast, co-hosted with Matt Chapman, Brennan confidently stated that he would select the Rich Ricci-owned mare over her stablemate and defending champion, State Man, if he were in Paul Townend’s position.
The discussion between Matt and Paddy delved into the implications of the Hatton’s Grace race’s outcome and raised questions about Constitution Hill’s potential return to form. With both experts weighing in, the conversation reflected the competitive landscape of the upcoming Champion Hurdle.

“The Hatton’s Grace was a fascinating race,” noted Paddy. “From the outset, it was clear that tactics played a key role. Jordan Gainford’s primary objective on Maxxum was to stay close to Paul Townend on Lossiemouth, keeping him on his toes. It was a very sportsmanlike contest.”
Brennan also praised Townend’s strategic approach, stating, “He showcased remarkable poise, remaining completely focused on the race without letting external factors distract him.” He added, “The only error made by Gainford was briefly glancing around to see where Townend was. It’s like the old saying—if you’re planning to sneak a kiss, don’t check for the boyfriend!”
He expressed admiration for Lossiemouth’s performance, saying, “She was astonishing—one of the best mares I’ve seen in quite some time.”
However, Matt was more cautious in his assessment of Lossiemouth’s victory. He pointed out that Gordon Elliott’s other competitor in the race, Beacon Edge, finished only nine lengths behind Teahupoo, suggesting that her performance might require further context. “While it’s impressive that Lossiemouth surpassed Teahupoo, we must recognize that Beacon Edge only trailed Teahupoo by five lengths,” Matt remarked. “This raises the possibility that Teahupoo did not perform to his capabilities and that Elliott’s tactics might have faltered.”
He continued, “The statistics reflect this clearly, with Teahupoo rated at 164 and Beacon Edge at 144, a striking 20-pound difference. While Lossiemouth did appear dominant, we should be cautious in labeling her as a ‘monster’ solely based on her speed past Teahupoo when Beacon Edge stayed so close.”
If Constitution Hill, State Man, Sir Gino, and Lossiemouth all compete in the Champion Hurdle, who is the likely victor?
Paddy’s response was definitive: “Lossiemouth. I would choose her over State Man without hesitation. I don’t believe any horse can contend with her when she’s carrying a 7-pound advantage.”
He acknowledged a concern regarding Constitution Hill, stating, “It’s troubling for him. I genuinely doubt he can regain his previous form. Currently, it seems highly unlikely that he could defeat a horse like Lossiemouth.”
On the other hand, Matt offered a contrasting viewpoint, emphasizing, “If Constitution Hill returns to his best, these competitors wouldn’t stand a chance. At his peak, he would be so far ahead that it wouldn’t even be a contest.”
