Unni Mukundan defends the film industry amidst Shine Tom Chacko’s drug case, calling cinema a ‘soft target’ not responsible for substance abuse.

Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has articulated his support for the film industry in light of the recent controversy involving Shine Tom Chacko. He argues that cinema is often unfairly targeted and should not bear the blame for the issues of substance abuse. Mukundan’s defense comes after criticisms aimed at his film, Marco, which has been alleged to depict substance misuse in a careless manner. He noted the importance of increasing transparency within the industry, particularly concerning female actors, which may assist in addressing troubling events fairly and effectively.

In remarks made during a media event in Kochi, Mukundan stated, “It is incorrect to attribute rising drug abuse and criminal activity to cinema. Movies do not have that level of influence over society.” He emphasized that the issue of substance abuse requires addressing at societal levels, rather than placing the burden solely on films.

Addressing the accusations against Marco, Mukundan expressed his belief that films should not be scapegoated for societal issues. He called for a deeper examination of how drugs are infiltrating communities, emphasizing questions about their origins and distribution channels. “How do these substances get into Kerala? How do they reach schools? Who is involved in their transportation? These have been longstanding concerns,” he remarked.

Mukundan further defended the narrative of Marco, stating that the film merely reflects societal realities rather than endorsing harmful behaviors. “In a nation that prides itself on education, it’s unfortunate that we still need to raise awareness about drug misuse. Marco serves as a commentary on real-life issues without promoting narcotics use. We need more focus on prevention and education in schools and homes. Addiction problems pervade numerous sectors, not just cinema,” he explained.

On a constructive note, Mukundan praised the growing openness among female actors who have come forward with accounts of their challenging experiences in the industry. He views this transparency as a pivotal step towards accountability and reform within the film world.

“It’s unproductive to single out cinema in this discussion. It is a vulnerable target for criticism. Addiction is a widespread issue, and the spotlight on actors amplifies their struggles. I believe this openness among actresses regarding their adversities is a positive development,” Mukundan concluded.

Background on the Shine Tom Chacko Controversy

Shine Tom Chacko was recently apprehended after he attempted to flee his hotel room during a drug raid conducted by the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF) on April 16 in Kochi. The operation targeted Chacko specifically, following a complaint by actress Vincy Aloshious, who claimed inappropriate behavior from Chacko while allegedly under the influence of drugs during filming for Soothravakyam.

After being interrogated for several hours, Chacko was subsequently released on bail. In a surprising turn, Vincy later withdrew her complaint against him, citing a breach of trust. The unfolding events spotlight the interconnected issues of substance abuse and accountability within the film industry, underscoring the need for ongoing dialogue and reform.
