Ancient Puppets Discovered in El Salvador Pyramid
Recent archaeological excavations at a pyramid in San Isidro, El Salvador, have revealed five unique ceramic puppets estimated to be around 2,400 years old. Notably, these figures showcase a range of dramatic facial expressions that change with the angle of view.
The collection comprises four female and one male figurine, each presenting a distinct emotional expression. Observers note that from eye level, the puppets seem angry; viewed from above, they appear to be grinning; and from below, they can be seen as looking frightened. This dynamic quality likely played a significant role in their use during rituals and storytelling sessions.
These meticulously crafted statues feature small drilled holes, indicating they were designed to be manipulated with strings, similar to marionettes. One of the smaller figures was found to fit inside another’s hollow torso, possibly symbolizing themes of birth or creation.
Situated close to the summit of the pyramid, these five figurines were found less than 50 centimeters beneath the apex. Three of them stand approximately 30 centimeters tall, while the remaining two are 18 centimeters and 10 centimeters in height. The larger figures are not adorned with clothing and possess movable heads and open mouths, which would enable expressive performances when in use.
“They are clay actors… When you hold them, their vivid expressions can even appear unsettling,” said Jan Szymanski, a co-author of the research published in a recent study featured in Science.
The initial discovery of these puppets took place in 2022. Initially believed to be part of a burial offering, the absence of any human remains nearby led researchers to reconsider their purpose. It appears more likely that these artifacts were utilized for public rituals or performances. Archaeologists have unearthed akin figurines in Guatemala, suggesting that these cultural artifacts were not exclusive to El Salvador.
This discovery raises intriguing questions about the interconnections among ancient Mesoamerican societies. The presence of similar items across different regions indicates a possible exchange of cultural practices or shared traditions, pointing to a richer historical narrative than previously understood.
