In a significant military operation, U.S. forces, in collaboration with Somali troops, executed an airstrike targeting Islamist militants amid ongoing skirmishes in a crucial central town. The airstrike, conducted in Adan Yabaal—located north of Mogadishu—follows an incursion by al-Shabab, which escalated tensions in the area.
According to a statement from the Somali information ministry, the airstrike resulted in the deaths of 12 militants, including several high-ranking members of the al-Qaeda-affiliated group. The operation was described as “well-coordinated,” emphasizing its strategic purpose.
The recent outbreak of violence raises significant concerns regarding a potential resurgence of jihadist activities in Somalia, particularly following a series of militant assaults, one of which notably targeted President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s motorcade last month.
Al-Shabab has maintained a stronghold over extensive portions of southern and central Somalia, challenging the federal government’s authority for nearly two decades, with the ultimate aim of establishing an Islamic state.
Despite earlier efforts by the African Union-led peacekeeping forces that pushed al-Shabab into a defensive position in 2022 and 2023, the group continues to pose a significant threat, as evidenced by their recent activities against government forces.
The Somali administration, however, asserts that recent military operations have successfully weakened the group’s capabilities.
The airstrike on Wednesday was characterized by the information ministry as a decisive measure to diminish the operational capabilities of al-Shabab. Authorities stated that the strike targeted a location primarily used by militants for regrouping and hiding, also confirming the absence of civilian casualties.
Adan Yabaal, located in the Middle Shabelle region, was under al-Shabab’s control from 2016 until its recapture by governmental forces in 2022, illustrating its fluctuating strategic importance.
Heavy clashes erupted early Wednesday after al-Shabab launched an assault on the town, deploying explosives in their attack. Reports from local residents indicated that militants claimed to have regained control over Adan Yabaal.
At this time, the Somali government has not disclosed current control of the town. However, President Mohamud had visited Adan Yabaal last month, meeting with military leaders to highlight its strategic relevance in the conflict against militant forces.
In an unrelated incident, Somali national forces reported the elimination of at least 35 militants near Baidoa on Thursday, following an attempted attack on a military base.
Despite the ongoing confrontations and al-Shabab’s recent advances, President Mohamud has minimized the implications of these setbacks, asserting that while challenges persist, his government remains resolute in its mission to defeat the militant group.
