U.S. and Mexico Reach Agreement on New World Screwworm Management
VERSAILLES, Ohio (Reuters) – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced on Monday that an accord has been established between the United States and Mexico regarding the management of New World screwworm. Further details regarding this agreement are expected to be disclosed shortly.
The New World screwworm poses a significant threat to livestock, wildlife, and, in rare instances, humans. The larvae of the screwworm fly can penetrate the skin of living animals, leading to severe and often fatal complications.
In a letter addressed to Mexico’s Agriculture Minister, Julio Berdegueon, Rollins expressed concerns over escalating infestations. She indicated that if adequate measures were not implemented by April 30, the United States would impose restrictions on livestock imports from Mexico.
During her visit to an egg production facility in Ohio, Rollins confirmed her dialogue with Berdegueon, highlighting that a positive resolution had been achieved.
“More will be released on that in the next few hours. It came to a good resolution,” she stated.
