U.S. Embassy Issues Warning on Jet Ski Rentals in Nassau
The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas has recently cautioned American women about the potential risks associated with renting jet skis in Nassau. Reports indicate that several American women have been victims of sexual assaults and rapes involving local jet ski operators, prompting this urgent advisory.
According to the warning, women have recounted disturbing experiences where jet ski operators allegedly assaulted them after transporting them from popular beach areas, including Junkanoo Beach and Cabbage Beach, to remote locations in the vicinity of New Providence. This alert follows two recent reports of rape and highlights a troubling pattern, with three similar incidents reported in the previous year.
In addition to these assaults, the embassy disclosed that multiple Americans have faced significant injuries resulting from jet ski accidents, with some requiring emergency medical evacuation back to the United States.
Increased Precautions Recommended
In light of these incidents, the U.S. Embassy advised that government personnel in the Bahamas are barred from renting or using jet skis on New Providence and Paradise islands. They also urged the public to reconsider engaging in jet ski rentals and to remain vigilant about their surroundings, especially in public restrooms and along beaches in Nassau.
The embassy stressed the importance of remaining aware of local weather conditions and adhering to marine alerts, further emphasizing that tourists should prioritize their safety while visiting.
Travel Advisory Context
This alarming situation comes at a time when the State Department has issued a Level 2 Travel Advisory for the Bahamas, as well as other Caribbean destinations such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The advisory advises travelers to be conscious of “heightened risks to safety and security” in these locales.
As concerns regarding safety in tourist hotspots continue to grow, individuals considering travel to the Bahamas are encouraged to exercise caution and stay informed about the local environment. The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation has yet to publicly address these grave concerns raised by the embassy’s warning.
