The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced its recommendations for the influenza viruses that will be included in vaccines for the upcoming 2025-2026 flu season. This year, in a departure from protocol, the FDA made the decision independently rather than relying on the input of its advisory committee.
The FDA stated that it does not expect any delays or issues regarding the availability of the flu vaccines for the public, despite this unusual approach.
This announcement coincides with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s recent confirmation as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kennedy has a history of vocal criticism towards various public health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which fall under his jurisdiction.

Kennedy has publicly stated that he does not identify as “anti-vaccine” and has affirmed that he would not obstruct Americans from receiving vaccinations.
The timing of the FDA’s recommendation aligns with the scheduled meeting of its Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, which was abruptly canceled on the same day.
Currently, the United States is experiencing its highest influenza rates in over 15 years, with the incidence still increasing.
