US Strikes at Ransomware Supply Chain with Indictment of Three Cryptocurrency Mixer Operators

Blender.io, which functioned between 2018 and 2022, marketed itself as a cryptocurrency mixer that guaranteed user anonymity by not retaining logs or personal information. Following Blender’s closure, Sinbad.io emerged as a replacement, providing similar mixing services until its own shutdown due to law enforcement actions on November 27, 2023.

Roman Vitalyevich Ostapenko, aged 55, is currently facing serious allegations, including one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and two counts concerning the operation of an unlicensed money transmission business. Alongside him, Alexander Evgenievich Oleynik, aged 44, and Anton Vyachlavovich Tarasov, aged 32, also face charges related to conspiracy to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting operation.

If convicted, the defendants could face significant prison sentences, potentially up to 20 years for the conspiracy to commit money laundering charge and five years for each count associated with the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business, as outlined by the Justice Department.
