Android 15’s Theft Detection Lock Faces Unintended Activation Issues
Android 15 has introduced a new security feature known as Theft Detection Lock, but it appears to be causing some frustration among users due to its tendency to activate without warning. Reports indicate that the system is locking individuals out of their devices even when no theft is occurring.
Part of Google’s ongoing initiative to bolster security measures within the Android ecosystem, Theft Detection Lock employs artificial intelligence alongside various parameters to identify potential theft scenarios. When a device is forcibly taken from its user—whether by someone running away, biking, or driving—the feature locks the device automatically. It is also designed to engage when the phone goes offline, as thieves often disable tracking capabilities to evade detection.
However, a growing number of users on Reddit have expressed concerns that the feature may be overly sensitive. Instances are being reported where phones lock unexpectedly despite being safely with their owners. For example, one user noted, “It’s happened to me when I ran out of work,” while another commented on their device locking while taking public transit. A third user recounted an incident while jogging, where their phone locked during their run, leading to an unexpected theft notification shortly after—describing the experience as both surprising and somewhat impressive, yet acknowledging the system’s excessive sensitivity.
The Theft Detection Lock’s operation relies heavily on the phone’s accelerometer to detect abrupt movements. Testing conducted by Android Authority during the feature’s initial development revealed that several attempts at simulating a theft event were necessary before the system would activate. This raises the possibility that the sensitivity of the detection mechanisms may have been amplified since its rollout.
While users have experienced frustrating lockouts, the general sentiment seems to be one of patience rather than outrage. Nonetheless, the unexpected activation of Theft Detection Lock could lead to concerns about reliability, suggesting that Google may need to fine-tune the feature to enhance its performance and user experience.
