Vice President Vance Faces Scrutiny Over DEI Hiring Claims
Vice President J.D. Vance recently faced significant questioning during an appearance on Fox News Sunday regarding his assertion that former Democratic administrations instructed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to avoid hiring white candidates. This claim emerged during Vance’s discussion with host Maria Bartiromo on the latest episode of Sunday Morning Futures.
Vance alleged that Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama had effectively barred white individuals from pursuing employment as air traffic controllers, stating, “There have been a number of lawsuits from people who would like to become air traffic controllers against the Obama and Biden administration, who basically said, ‘We were told not even to apply because of the color of our skin,’ because they were white people.”
He continued to argue that under the administration’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, white applicants faced discrimination, suggesting this resulted in a lack of qualified individuals in crucial positions. “Under the DEI regime of the Biden administration, they weren’t welcome. It means that we don’t have the best and the brightest sometimes in these positions,” he stated.
These comments have been amplified by other Republican figures, including former President Donald Trump, who have linked DEI hiring practices to a recent air traffic control crash that tragically resulted in 67 fatalities in the Washington, D.C., area. Vance’s remarks were made in the context of ongoing discussions about staffing shortages within the air traffic control sector.
However, Maria Bartiromo interjected to remind Vance of the longstanding awareness of air traffic control staffing issues, pointing out, “We knew for years that we had a shortage at air traffic control.” In response, Vance reiterated his position, “Part of the reason why we had a shortage in air traffic control is because we were telling our air traffic controllers not to hire people because of the color of their skin. That is a scandal. And it is a scandal, thankfully, that has stopped under the leadership of Donald Trump.”
When pressed further about evidence relating the recent hires at the FAA to DEI policies, Vance acknowledged he did not possess concrete proof linking DEI initiatives to those specific individuals. “This is not saying that the person who was at the controls is a DEI hire, but let’s just say, first of all, we should investigate everything,” he conceded. He maintained that there is a “very direct connection” between past administration policies and the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers, emphasizing that this issue requires immediate attention.
