Vanessa Guillén’s Sister Contemplates Congressional Run Against Rep. Al Green

The sister of Vanessa Guillén, a U.S. Army soldier tragically murdered at Fort Hood, Texas, is considering a bid for Congress to challenge Rep. Al Green, a Democrat representing the area.

Mayra Guillén expressed her intent to enter the political arena after feeling disillusioned by Green’s behavior during a recent address by former President Donald Trump to Congress. In a statement on social media, she conveyed her frustration, stating, “After witnessing the disrespect directed not only at the president but also towards our district, state, and nation, I feel compelled to take action as I did while advocating for my sister, Vanessa.” She asserted her goal to challenge the prevailing narratives within politics and to support Trump’s vision for the country, declaring, “Al Green, I’m coming for your seat.”

Mayra Guillén and their mother, Lupe Guillén, have been vocal advocates for military justice reform, promoting the Vanessa Guillén Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act, which seeks to shift the responsibility for prosecuting serious military crimes away from the chain of command. This initiative aims to ensure that victims within the military receive fair treatment and justice.

Local media, such as the Houston Chronicle, reported on Mayra’s prospective campaign, noting that she has not yet officially filed the required paperwork. Attempts to reach her for further comment have been unsuccessful as of the latest updates.

Rep. Al Green has served the predominantly Democratic Houston district since 2005 and faced no opposition in the last election cycle. His contentious exchange with President Trump during the latter’s initial congressional address upon returning to office resulted in Green being removed from the chamber by the Sergeant at Arms, following a series of outbursts that culminated in a censure from fellow lawmakers.

In addition to her political aspirations, Mayra Guillén established the “I am Vanessa Guillén Foundation” in 2021, a group dedicated to empowering survivors of military-related sexual violence.

MURDERED FORT HOOD SOLDIER VANESSA GUILLÉN DESERVES SAME RESPECT AS GEORGE FLOYD, BIDEN MUST ACT, FAMILY SAYS

Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old soldier, was reported missing in April 2020, prompting an extensive search that ended with the revelation of her murder by fellow soldier Aaron Robinson. Robinson took his own life shortly after authorities closed in on him in July 2020. Cecily Aguilar, Robinson’s girlfriend, was charged in connection to the case and received a 30-year prison sentence for her role in concealing Vanessa’s murder.

Guillén’s family has consistently advocated for accountability concerning allegations of sexual harassment at Fort Hood. Despite assertions from Army officials that Robinson did not harass her, a report acknowledged that another soldier had indeed harassed her during her service. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy previously highlighted Fort Hood’s alarming rates of crime, including murder and sexual offenses, attributing these patterns to failures in leadership.

In response to Guillén’s case, both state and federal legislators passed reforms in 2021 aimed at enhancing protections for military personnel reporting abuse, effectively diminishing commanders’ authority over such cases. The Army has since disciplined numerous officers linked to failures in the response to Guillén’s situation, and in May 2023, Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos as part of a broader effort to honor her legacy.
