Varun Dhawan Discusses YRF’s Decision Against Casting Him in Action Roles

At a recent promotional event for his upcoming project, *Citadel: Honey Bunny*, Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan shared insights into his interactions with Yash Raj Films (YRF) and his ambitions in the action film genre. During the event, he revealed that he had approached YRF’s chairman, Aditya Chopra, with hopes of being cast in an action film. However, the response he received was a definitive refusal, with Chopra indicating that the financial demands of such a project were not justifiable at that time.

Varun expressed his understanding of the complexities surrounding film budgets, saying, “I get it that Adi sir is focused on films with huge stars like Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Their projects come with considerably larger budgets.” He acknowledged that he is still on a journey to elevate his own commercial value within the industry. “I am not deluding myself into thinking my projects can match theirs just yet. But, I believe in continuing to strive for those opportunities,” Varun added.

Reflecting on the challenges of filmmaking, Varun emphasized that his desire to land action roles is not rooted in ego, but in a desire to comprehend the intricacies of high-budget productions. “I’ve gained insights into the immense effort and resources required to produce such films,” he noted, acknowledging the importance of financial viability in the industry. “I understand that it’s essential to be realistic about where I stand right now.”

Despite facing this setback, Varun remains committed to honing his skills and aspiring for bigger projects in the future. He compared the budget disparities between Indian cinema and western films, yet he maintained confidence in the caliber of talent within the Indian film industry, stating, “Sometimes, when the budget isn’t there, talent can compensate for many shortcomings.”

At the trailer launch of *Citadel: Honey Bunny*, Varun reiterated his desire to make a mark in the action genre, revealing that his discussions with Chopra have only intensified his resolve. He recounted his inquiry to Chopra about the possibility of creating an action film with newer talent, to which he was told that the focus would remain on acting roles for now. Nevertheless, Varun’s persistence in seeking clarity on the budget reflected his ambitious nature. “After a prolonged discussion, I finally learned the financial range needed for an action film, which set the stage for my next steps,” he concluded.
