Insights from Chinni Prakash on Kimi Katkar’s Daring Stunt
The unforgettable tune of “Jumma Chumma De De,” featuring Amitabh Bachchan, still ignites joy in fans’ hearts decades after its debut. Released in 1991 as part of the film *Hum*, this lively number showcases the dynamic chemistry between Bachchan and actress Kimi Katkar, making it a timeless classic widely celebrated across generations. The song’s choreography, masterfully crafted by Chinni Prakash, adds to its enduring appeal.
In a recent conversation with ETimes, Prakash shared intriguing behind-the-scenes revelations about the production of the iconic number. He reflected on the shoot’s unique dynamics, particularly the challenges Katkar faced among a predominantly male crew. “Kimi was an excellent dancer, but being surrounded by around 2,000 men could be quite uncomfortable for her,” Prakash noted.
One notable moment Prakash recounted involves a dramatic sequence where Bachchan removes Katkar’s skirt and jets her with water. He clarified the equipment used, revealing, “The nozzle wasn’t a typical one; it came from a fire engine. The sheer force, combined with about 15-20 crew members holding it, exerted significant pressure on her.” This led to a startling mishap when Katkar was propelled 20 feet off a cliff during the shoot, an incident that highlighted both the unpredictability of film production and her fortitude.
Despite the pain and tears following her fall, Prakash lauded Katkar’s determination. “She was visibly hurt and cried, prompting a temporary halt in filming. Yet, her spirit was unwavering. She fought to continue,” he recounted, emphasizing her resilience in the face of adversity.
The filming conditions added another layer of difficulty, as the production team operated in Mukesh Mills without modern conveniences that filmmakers often rely on today. However, the dedication and teamwork of the cast and crew ultimately led to the successful completion of “Jumma Chumma De De,” marking it as a significant cinematic achievement.
Reflecting on the emotional responses to the song, Prakash mentioned Jaya Bachchan’s enthusiastic praise, stating, “Jaya ji applauded and exclaimed, ‘Amit, what a dance! This is iconic.’ It was in that moment Amit ji realized the impact of our work, and he delivered every step with renewed vigor the following day.”
Chinni Prakash also acknowledged Bachchan’s unwavering commitment during the shoot. Despite dealing with health challenges and having undergone surgery prior, the superstar exhibited remarkable dedication. “He never complained, even if we did 15 takes; each time, he was ready to give his best,” Prakash remarked.
After an arduous 15-day shooting period, the team wrapped up with a mix of exhaustion and emotion, reflecting on the journey. Prakash also extended his gratitude to producer Romesh Sharma for his role in assembling such a cohesive team and ensuring that everyone worked harmoniously together.
