Transformative Design in Kreuzberg: A Penthouse Project

Kreuzberg, celebrated for its vibrant culture and contemporary atmosphere, has recently become the backdrop for a remarkable penthouse renovation by Studio Bosko. The project spans 1,539 square feet and required a complete overhaul to meet the unique desires of its new occupants, a couple who relocated from Amsterdam during the pandemic. Their initial inquiry to the studio came after discovering this particular unit, which they envisioned as more than just a living space.

The studio, founded by architect Kasia Kronberger, was presented with a clear directive: to craft a multifunctional home that embraced a broader color palette beyond just whites and subdued pastels. The couple sought a creative environment that encourages freedom and inspires imagination. This aspiration was influenced by their personal experiences; one partner is an illustrator, while the other has a specific type of color blindness, granting him an affinity for vivid colors. Thus, Studio Bosko was led to adopt a vibrant palette featuring bold primary colors—yellow, green, red, and blue.

The infusion of color becomes a transformative aspect of the home’s design, fostering a sense of well-being for its residents and ensuring they feel at ease in their surroundings. The penthouse exudes individuality, with its colors contributing to a distinct character that speaks volumes.

Natural light streams into the space through expansive windows that connect the interior to a terrace, further enhancing the different areas within the penthouse. Each zone is thoughtfully defined by its specific color: yellow for the kitchen, red for the dining area, and green for the living room. In contrast, more intimate spaces like the bedroom adopt a subtler approach, employing wood tones and darker hues to create calming environments for rest and relaxation.

Throughout the renovation process, the team faced challenges from supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 restrictions that inevitably affected the timeline. However, Kronberger remained focused on achieving a harmonious balance between functionality and comfort. “Our goal was to ensure that the home remains inviting and timeless,” she explained. All design decisions were made collaboratively with the clients, ultimately resulting in a space where they could unwind, entertain family and friends, and even work when necessary. The outcome is an apartment that feels refined yet unconfined, radiating character without feeling cluttered.
