Vicky Kaushal Embodies the Spirit of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Chhaava
Vicky Kaushal is slated to take on the role of the esteemed Maratha emperor, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, in the upcoming historical film Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar. During the film’s trailer launch, Kaushal expressed his enthusiasm for returning to an action-oriented role, particularly following his acclaimed performance in Uri: The Surgical Strike.
“My previous action film was Uri: The Surgical Strike, and since then, I have been looking forward to another project that would allow me to showcase similar intensity and physicality. Chhaava felt like the right fit, providing me with the opportunity to explore something entirely new,” stated Kaushal.
To prepare for his character, Vicky undertook extensive training, which was essential given that he was unfamiliar with horse riding initially. He also dedicated around six to seven months to master various combat techniques, including sword, stick, and spear fighting. In a remarkable physical transformation, he gained 25 kg, increasing his weight from 80 kg to approximately 105 kg for the role.
Reflecting on his preparation process, Vicky conveyed a sense of fulfillment, stating, “Throughout the training period, I sensed something extraordinary was unfolding. While it may be difficult to articulate now that the project is nearing completion, I can confidently say I poured every ounce of effort into this role. I feel satisfied knowing that I left nothing untried.”
Kaushal touched upon the initial trepidation he felt about portraying such an iconic historical figure. He acknowledged that the profound emotional connections people have with these characters amplify the pressure to perform authentically. “The fear of not doing justice to such characters arises from an understanding of the sentiments and beliefs intertwined with them,” he explained, praising Utekar for instilling confidence in him to embrace the role.
The film also features Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Maharani Yesubai, alongside Akshaye Khanna. This marks Vicky’s second collaboration with Utekar, following their previous work on Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.
Rashmika attended the event in a wheelchair due to a recent gym-related injury but expressed her deep appreciation for her role as Yesubai. “Being a girl from the South, it’s a privilege to portray a Maharani. This character feels incredibly special, and I feel fortunate to have this opportunity in my career. I even remarked to Laxman sir that after this experience, I might feel content enough to consider retirement,” she shared, highlighting the significance of her role.
Director Utekar, known for his successful projects such as Mimi and Luka Chuppi, extended his gratitude to producer Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films for entrusting him with the narrative of this legendary warrior. Chhaava is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025.
