Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava will see Vicky Kaushal in the role of Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal recently praised his wife, Katrina Kaif, for her support during the production of his upcoming film “Chhaava.” Kaushal noted that Kaif’s understanding of the demands of intense acting helped him navigate the emotional challenges of portraying such a complex historical figure.
Under the direction of Laxman Utekar, “Chhaava” will feature Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the renowned Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film is produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, known for bringing compelling narratives to the screen.
For Kaushal, this project marks his third portrayal of a historical character, following his notable performances as revolutionary Udham Singh in “Sardar Udham” and India’s first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in “Sam Bahadur.” He expressed the heightened responsibility that comes with such roles.
“Biopics entail a unique responsibility. But with Sambhaji, the stakes are even higher given the historical significance and reverence surrounding his legacy. I’m grateful for the research and preparation by Dinoo sir and Laxman sir, as the character demands depth and authenticity,” the actor explained during a promotional event in New Delhi, where he was joined by co-stars and the film’s producer.
Kaushal elaborated on the emotional toll of shooting intense scenes, describing how he occasionally found himself quieter at home as he processed his experiences on set. The actor remarked on the limited personal time he had after long filming days, emphasizing how Kaif’s understanding of the industry allowed for a supportive home environment during this period.
He also highlighted the importance of recognizing Sambhaji’s contributions to history, noting that while many are familiar with Shivaji Maharaj, his son’s role in advancing the Maratha cause has often been overlooked. “Sambhaji fought valiantly and made great sacrifices that were critical to our history. It’s essential to share his story with a wider audience,” he stated.
Utekar, who has directed successful films such as “Luka Chuppi” and “Mimi,” echoed Kaushal’s sentiments about the film’s significance, asserting that “Chhaava” serves to illuminate stories that deserve to be told. He emphasized the urgency of bringing these historical narratives to light for younger generations.
In the film, Rashmika Mandanna plays Maharani Yesubai, Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, and she shared her admiration for the character’s qualities of respect and kindness, which she finds crucial in today’s world. Mandanna, who comes from the South Indian film industry, expressed her excitement at portraying such a pivotal figure in history.
In preparation for her role, Mandanna focused intently on mastering the languages and dialects pertinent to her character, acknowledging the grace and responsibilities that come with being a Maharani. She highlighted her determination to authentically capture the essence of her character, driven by Utekar’s passion for storytelling.
Alongside Kaushal and Mandanna, the film features a talented cast including Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, and Ashutosh Rana. “Chhaava” is set to hit theaters this Friday, promising to bring history to life through compelling performances and storytelling.
