Maverick Vinales Penalized After Qatar Grand Prix Success
Maverick Vinales, riding for Tech3 KTM, faced a significant setback after his impressive second-place finish at the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix. Due to a violation concerning tyre pressure regulations, he has been downgraded to 14th place in the final standings.
The penalty imposed was substantial—a 16-second deduction for operating with illegal tyre pressures. This ruling effectively nudges Franco Morbidelli of VR46 Ducati into a well-deserved second podium finish in just three races, altering the competitive landscape of the event.
Vinales had initially celebrated his journey to second place, marking a notable achievement in a challenging start to his tenure with KTM, as it was his first top-10 result this season. However, following the race, the FIM stewards initiated an investigation into his tyre pressure compliance. Ultimately, they confirmed that the pressures were below the prescribed limits.
While Vinales is entitled to appeal the decision, he expressed contentment during the post-race press conference, indicating that any potential sanctions would not diminish his joy. “I don’t care what will happen afterwards,” he stated. “I’m happy with the result. I’m happy with the performance. We are very pleased.”
He further indicated the significance of this performance for the KTM project, emphasizing, “This is something we [KTM] needed. And this is achieved… for the project. So, I’m really happy.”
Despite the challenging commencement of the 2025 season, Pit Beirer, the motorsport director for KTM, voiced strong sentiments against the criticism directed at the team. He noted the potential for race victories this season seems more attainable in light of Vinales’ recent performance.
