Virat Kohli Declines T20 Comeback at 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has stated that he will not return to T20 international play for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. This announcement comes as cricket prepares to make its Olympic return for the first time since 1900, included among five new sports at the Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the cricket tournament will feature the T20 format, but specific details regarding team qualification processes remain undisclosed. Cricket officials and event organizers are eager to harness the sport’s popularity in India to galvanize interest in the Olympics, especially given the substantial commercial potential associated with Indian participation.
Kohli, who stepped away from T20 international competition following India’s 2024 World Cup victory, indicated that he will still engage in the T20 format through domestic leagues, particularly the Indian Premier League (IPL).
During a recent sports summit linked to his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the 36-year-old expressed that the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is a remarkable opportunity for many players. However, when probed about the possibility of rejoining the national team for the Olympic event, he firmly responded “no.” He humorously added that he might consider returning for “one game” if it meant competing for a gold medal, indicating his deep connection to the sport and his nation’s aspirations.
Throughout his T20 international career, Kohli has made significant contributions, participating in 125 matches and amassing 4,188 runs at an impressive average of 48.69. His record includes one century and 38 half-centuries, underscoring his status as one of the outstanding players in the format.
