Vivek Oberoi’s Remarkable Journey to Securing a Role in ‘Company’
Vivek Oberoi, an acclaimed actor in Bollywood, recently shared an inspiring account of how he secured his debut role in the 2002 film, Company, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Despite having strong familial connections in the industry, Oberoi was determined to prove his talent on merit alone, leading to a unique approach to his audition.
Overcoming Initial Rejection
Initially, Oberoi faced rejection from Varma during his audition. The director remarked that while he saw potential in the young actor, Oberoi’s polished appearance and education did not align with the gritty character of Chandu, a role meant for someone from a less privileged background. Undeterred, Oberoi requested a second meeting to demonstrate his commitment and capability for the part.
“I requested one more chance, and Varma agreed to reconsider after his travels,” Oberoi recounted. Rather than returning home, he embarked on an unconventional journey to immerse himself in the life that was reflective of his character.
Living the Experience
For three weeks, Oberoi took up residence in a nearby slum, fully embracing the surroundings and culture. He recorded local dialects and interactions using a dictaphone, which helped him internalize the essence of the character he sought to portray. Additionally, he enlisted the help of a photographer, promising him a cover shoot if his efforts proved successful.
When the time came for his second meeting with Varma, Oberoi prepared meticulously. “I dressed as the character, complete with ill-fitting pants and a torn vest, to better embody his essence when I walked into the meeting,” he explained. He even went so far as to light a beedi (an Indian cigarette) to add to the authenticity of his portrayal.
A Transformative Audition
Upon entering Varma’s office with a confident demeanor, Oberoi left a lasting impression. “I threw my pictures on the table and gave him a commanding stare,” he recalled. This boldness paid off when Varma recognized Oberoi’s commitment and ultimately offered him the role.
The experience solidified Oberoi’s aspiration to work with Varma, whose previous film Satya had left a significant mark on him. “It was a dream to collaborate with a filmmaker of his caliber, and being part of Company was a milestone in my career,” he said.
Since his breakthrough role, Oberoi has continued to make strides in the industry, most recently featuring in Rohit Shetty’s Indian Police Force and looking forward to his next project, Masti 4.
