Sen. Warren Criticizes Trump Administration Over Deportation Case
On Thursday, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) sharply criticized the Trump administration regarding the controversial deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident who was wrongfully sent back to El Salvador.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, Warren expressed her concerns, stating, “They want to have the American people say it’s OK to just disappear people. And somehow they think, if they can make up lies about him, if they can do whatever they want, then the answer will be the American people will settle for this.”
The senator emphasized the principle that individuals should not simply vanish without due process, warning, “We do not disappear people in the United States. Because here’s the thing, if they can disappear Mr. Abrego Garcia, then they can disappear you.”
Abrego Garcia’s deportation occurred despite a specific ruling from a U.S. immigration judge in 2019 that had protected him from being sent back to El Salvador, his country of origin.
The Trump administration has contended that Abrego Garcia was in the country illegally and has portrayed him as a threat to society. Attorney General Pam Bondi weighed in, asserting that Abrego Garcia is affiliated with the notorious gang MS-13, stating, “He’s not a Maryland man. He’s part of a foreign terrorist organization… who came to this country and committed just gang acts.”
As this case highlights broader issues of immigration enforcement policies and human rights, The Hill has contacted the White House for a response regarding these serious allegations and the implications of such deportations on American values and legal protections.
