In her remarks, she recalled a time when her grandfather faced discrimination in sports based merely on the color of his skin, saying, “I remember a time not long ago when people like my grandfather were denied participation in sports because he was a Black man.” She emphasized that societal beliefs often dictate the rights and opportunities afforded to marginalized communities.

Referring to the scientific studies presented in support of the argument that transgender athletes have an unfair advantage, Reeves remarked that similar “science” was once used to justify racial discrimination. “We are repeating history in this debate, and it is very concerning,” she said, highlighting the recurring theme of bias against groups that society has historically marginalized.

Reeves’ emotional appeal was met with resistance from Republican colleagues. Representative Michael Keaton argued that the biology behind male and female athletic capabilities cannot be overlooked, stressing that differences in physical attributes can lead to harmful outcomes for female athletes. “There have been numerous instances this year where females have faced injury or have seen their lifetime achievements undermined when males transition categories,” he asserted.

This sentiment was echoed by Representative Travis Couture, who dismissed Reeves’ comparisons to racial segregation as misplaced. He argued that current policies aimed at protecting female athletes are an advancement rather than a regression, contending that they ensure fairness in sport and equity in opportunities for women.
