Media’s Attempt to Appeal to MAGA Readers Draws Criticism from Jennifer Rubin

At a recent event held at the 92NY Center for Culture & Arts, Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin shared her reflections on the impact of the recent election in which Donald Trump secured a second term as President. Joining her in the discussion was prominent anti-Trump advocate George Conway.

Rubin articulated her concerns regarding media practices following the election, particularly calling out her own publication for its attempts to attract Trump supporters. According to her, this strategy reflects a misunderstanding of the audience that the media is trying to cultivate.

The Dilemma of Media and MAGA Readers

Rubin stated, “People often ask me why the media appears to be so eager to please. There are a couple of reasons.” She expressed skepticism over the belief that a slight shift in political alignment by media outlets would entice MAGA supporters. “What is fundamentally flawed about this reasoning? Simply put, there’s little that publications like The Washington Post could implement to convert those individuals into subscribers,” she asserted.

Despite her criticisms of the Washington Post and its owners, including Jeff Bezos, Rubin remains a committed columnist, often maintaining an ironic distance from her own publication’s decisions. “I can enjoy a sense of rebellion within my own workplace. Given the mainstream media’s current approach, it allows me to take a stand in my commentary,” she quipped.

Claims of Political Bias

Rubin has faced accusations of bias, to which she retorted, “I see myself as completely impartial. I merely aim for accuracy.” Her commitment to factual reporting remains a cornerstone of her writing, even as she critiques the broader media landscape.

Following Bezos’s announcement that The Washington Post would not endorse any presidential candidate in the upcoming election, Rubin did not hold back from criticizing him. “I find the reasoning provided to be unconvincing. I refuse to accept that they have suddenly chosen to adopt a policy that excludes endorsements for presidential candidates, especially given that they did so without issue in 2020. This feels like a concession to Trump at a critical time for our democracy,” she noted during her podcast.

Reactions to Conversations with Trump

Rubin did not spare MSNBC from her critique, pointing out that the hosts of “Morning Joe” met with Trump post-election. She questioned their rationale, asking, “What were they thinking? Who do they believe their audience is?” She speculated that their motivations may have stemmed more from a desire for self-preservation than an understanding of viewer preferences, remarking on the appalling submission of these elites to the whims of political power.

In a media landscape increasingly examined for its integrity and alignment with political movements, Rubin’s critiques contribute to the ongoing discussion about the role and responsibilities of journalism in today’s polarized society.
