Washington Post Editorial Board Avoids Endorsement for Presidential Candidates

The Washington Post’s editorial board has sparked significant conversation by deciding not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris or any presidential candidate for the upcoming election. This development has surprised many, including members within their own team, especially considering the board’s history of supporting Democratic candidates in various congressional contests.

Recently, the board has made its stance clear on several races, endorsing Democratic candidates in Senate and House elections across Virginia and Maryland, as well as in some D.C. primary elections. The editorial board’s focus remains on endorsing Democrats, having only gone against this trend in 1988 when they refrained from endorsing Michael Dukakis.

On Friday, the board publicly announced its decision to abstain from endorsing either major presidential candidate, a notable choice in a political climate where endorsements often sway public opinion. Historically, the board has supported Democratic candidates in presidential elections, aside from its singular exception in the late ’80s.

In its recent decisions, the editorial board endorsed Democratic candidate Eugene Vindman over Republican Derrick Anderson in Virginia’s seventh congressional district race. Additionally, the Post backed Senator Tim Kaine for his reelection, emphasizing what they perceive as his essential experience and capability to serve effectively in the Senate. They expressed skepticism regarding his opponent, Hung Cao, citing concerns about Cao’s temperament and political associations.

Concerns Over Candidates’ Connections

The board noted issues with Cao’s ties to former President Trump, highlighting his self-identification with the “MAGA” movement and comments that compared President Biden to authoritarian figures. Their critique emphasized that Cao’s rhetoric raises red flags about his suitability for the Senate.

In Maryland, the editorial board endorsed Angela D. Alsobrooks over former Governor Larry Hogan in the Senate race. They commended Alsobrooks’ capabilities and indicated that her approach would be more beneficial for the state, contrasting her stance with that of Hogan, whom they previously endorsed during his gubernatorial campaign.

The editorial suggested that while Hogan has a commendable gubernatorial record, his current campaign lacks clear policy proposals, focusing instead on tone and process, particularly concerning reproductive rights. The board believes this might not translate into effective legislation in Washington.

Criticism of Harris

As part of their editorial deliberations, the board has voiced concerns over Vice President Harris’s economic policies and has challenged her to clarify her shift from some of the more progressive positions she held during her 2019 presidential campaign.

In contrast, Donald Trump has faced ongoing criticism from the board. They routinely address his controversial rhetoric and positions, from social security debates to various leadership decisions. In previous election cycles, the board was unequivocal in its endorsements for President Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016.

In light of these developments, some members of the Post’s editorial team have expressed their discontent with the recent decisions, including editor at large Robert Kagan, who resigned following the board’s choice to forgo a presidential endorsement.

This announcement raises questions about the editorial board’s strategy and the potential impact of its neutrality on the upcoming election cycle.
