A recent incident in Colorado’s Keystone Ski Resort underscored the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters in outdoor recreational areas.
On Sunday, a video captured by a resort employee depicts skier Brian O’Neal traversing the slopes when a black bear unexpectedly appeared and dashed in his direction.
Fortunately, O’Neal was able to steer clear of a more direct interaction, as the bear quickly retreated into the forest.
“I noticed something moving out of the corner of my eye, and my instinct was to dodge it,” O’Neal shared with Summit Daily News. “Usually, I see moose around, but encountering a bear was a first for me.”
In a related discussion, Nathan Lynch, the resort employee who filmed the moment, explained that he and his friends had been actively looking for the bear after hearing about previous sightings from other guests.
“We were fortunate to spot the bear as it made its way through the trees connecting various runs,” Lynch recounted. “So, we positioned ourselves at the next path the bear intended to take and waited to capture the footage.”

O’Neal remarked that this unexpected encounter occurred during his very first run of the day.
“It all happened so fast; my focus was on avoiding a collision,” he noted.
This event also marked the final day of the skiing season at the Keystone resort, adding a unique twist to an already memorable experience for O’Neal.
