Excitement Builds for the Broadway Adaptation of “Smash”

Caroline Bowman and Robyn Hurder are set to showcase their talents in the new musical “Smash,” performing the poignant song “Don’t Forget Me.” This Broadway adaptation of the beloved television series is slated to begin previews on March 11, 2025. Bowman and Hurder will portray the iconic characters Karen Cartwright and Ivy Lynn, bringing the story to life on stage. Notably, the song will be part of “Smash’s” original Broadway cast album, forthcoming from Concord Theatricals Recordings.

The music video for “Don’t Forget Me” adds to the promotional materials, joining previous releases that include visuals for “Let Me Be Your Star (Opening Version)” and “They Just Keep Moving the Line.”

Directed by the accomplished Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award winner for works like “The Producers,” “Smash” boasts a talented cast. Highlights include Brooks Ashmanskas, a two-time Tony nominee, as “Nigel,” alongside Krysta Rodriguez, who played “Tracy” in the original “Smash” series. The ensemble also features John Behlmann as “Jerry,” Kristine Nielsen as “Susan,” Jacqueline B. Arnold as “Anita,” Bella Coppola as “Chloe,” Casey Garvin as “Charlie,” and Nicholas Matos in his Broadway debut as “Scott.”

The supporting company is composed of a diverse group of performers, including Wendi Bergamini, Sarah Bowden, Jacob Burns, Deanna Cudjoe, Chelle Denton, Daniel Gaymon, Merritt David Janes, and many others, all contributing to the vibrant tapestry of the production.

Musically, “Smash” will feature a score crafted by the renowned Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who have previously won Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Awards. They have penned over two dozen songs for the original television series, many of which will be incorporated into the stage adaptation alongside newly composed pieces.

The script is penned by Rick Elice and Bob Martin, both seasoned figures in the Broadway arena. Elice is known for his work on “Jersey Boys,” while Martin has contributed to hits like “The Prom.” Choreographer Joshua Bergasse, who was instrumental in the original television series, will reprise his role, ensuring that the dance elements remain true to the show’s roots. Additionally, Jennifer Hudson, an EGOT winner, has joined the producing team after appearing as a guest star in the second season of “Smash.”

The technical aspects of the production promise to be as impressive as the cast itself, with scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, costume design by Alejo Vietti, and lighting by Ken Billington. The soundscape will be enhanced by Brian Ronan, with projections from S Katy Tucker and orchestrations by Doug Besterman. Music supervision will be handled by Stephen Oremus, also a two-time Tony winner.

As audiences prepare for the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the creation of “Bombshell,” a new musical exploring the life of Marilyn Monroe, “Smash” aims to deliver a thrilling blend of humor, drama, and extraordinary musical numbers. This adaptation promises an unforgettable theatrical experience for both fans of the show and newcomers alike, featuring classic songs such as “Let Me Be Your Star.”
