The New Features of watchOS 11: A Comprehensive Overview

A few weeks ago, I found myself frustrated with NJ Transit and decided to hail an Uber instead. Typically, I would anxiously track my driver’s arrival on my phone, but this time was different. Thanks to the new Smart Stack feature on my Apple Watch, I could view a live Uber widget right on my wrist. This small yet delightful moment made me appreciate the innovations of watchOS 11.

During several months of testing watchOS 11, including the beta and the newly released Series 10, I’ve encountered numerous similar “a-ha” moments. This latest software update introduces Live Activities and a selection of suggested widgets in the Smart Stack. These widgets adapt according to your context—time, location, and even the weather. For instance, if rain is on the horizon, the weather widget may prompt you first when you glance at your watch. Similarly, while traveling, I noticed the United Airlines app showing the remaining time until landing, as well as the Shazam widget presenting whenever I was in a bustling café.

If rain is expected, watchOS will proactively show the weather widget indicating upcoming precipitation.

Interestingly, many users might overlook these features unless they happen to glance at their watch. Live Activities—featuring live updates for directions or ride-hailing services—are more eye-catching, while other widgets seamlessly blend into the background, often going unnoticed. For most users, smartwatches serve primarily for managing notifications. This new system elevates that experience, enhancing functionality while maintaining a subtle presence on the wrist.

watchOS 11 is filled with clever enhancements that users may stumble across. For instance, the double-tap gesture is upgraded to allow scrolling through apps, making it feel less like a novelty and more integrated into daily use. Users can also easily customize the Action Button on the Ultra model, simplifying the switching process without diving deep into the settings menu. Moreover, the digital crown now allows users to adjust the volume for Apple TV, adding to the watch’s versatility.

The Tides app, a fresh addition in watchOS 11, offers functionality, although it may not appeal to those who prefer to avoid open water.

The Training Load feature in watchOS 11 is a welcomed enhancement I’ve previously discussed. It’s a long-overdue tool for fitness enthusiasts.

While Apple Intelligence may not yet be a part of the Apple Watch ecosystem, the updates presented in watchOS 11 do instill a sense of advanced intelligence. For instance, the reworked Photos watch face incorporates “intelligent photo discovery,” utilizing a machine learning algorithm that curates images based on quality and emotion. This results in a mix of impressive and unexpected selections.

On the downside, my initial choice to let the algorithm select images led to some surprises—one notable instance was a watch face showcasing a photo from my mother’s funeral. While it brought a bittersweet laugh, it underscored a key point: while algorithms can be astute, they lack emotional sensitivity. Conversely, by selecting specific images, I transformed the watch face into a joyful display of my pets, evoking happiness every time I glance at my wrist.

What a charming feline! This is an example of the best use of the revamped Photos watchface.

It’s amusing to reflect on my initial excitement back in June when watchOS 11 was unveiled, particularly regarding the fitness updates like Training Load and Vitals. Although these features are impressive, I’ve found a greater appreciation for the subtle refinements that create an overall smarter, more tailored experience. Now, I’m eager to explore ordering food through Grubhub and tracking it directly from my wrist.

Additional Observations and Insights

  • I appreciate the ability to start a Check-In during workouts, which enhances my sense of safety during runs outside my usual routes or close to sunset. This feature also provides peace of mind for my spouse.
  • The Training Load metrics can now be viewed both collectively and for individual exercises—a useful tool for anyone cross-training or introducing new workouts.
  • The Fitness app customization allows users to prioritize widgets based on personal preferences, such as running distances and step counts.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation for hiking expeditions is now available via the Maps app, although I still prefer the AllTrails app for hiking guidance.
  • The translation function on the watch is a fascinating feature, but it works best when users speak slowly and deliberately, as quick speech or slang can lead to misunderstandings.
  • The new Training Load and Vitals complications for the Modular Ultra watch face are fantastic, though it is frustrating that this feature is exclusive to the Ultra model.
