Diego Luna Discusses the Conclusion of Andor After Two Seasons

Diego Luna, the lead actor in Andor, shared his thoughts on the upcoming end of the Star Wars series, which is set to conclude after just two seasons. Originally envisioned as a five-season saga, the decision to wrap it up sooner has sparked conversations about the show’s direction and its impact within the Star Wars universe.

Luna expressed his contentment with the decision made by Disney to limit Andor to two seasons instead of prematurely terminating the series after the first. In a conversation with TechRadar, he conveyed relief and pride for the chance to tell a comprehensive narrative that satisfies the creative vision he, showrunner Tony Gilroy, and the entire cast aimed for in this Rogue One prequel. He emphasized the importance of exploring and concluding the story cohesively rather than facing cancellation, which many shows do.

Despite receiving commendations and accolades for its first season, including critical acclaim, the costs associated with the development of Andor were significant. Reports suggest that the production of its initial two seasons cost a staggering $645 million, according to Forbes.

As Disney adapts its strategies under CEO Bob Iger’s leadership, the expansive five-season plan for Andor seemed increasingly untenable. Luna clarified that a pivotal moment in the development process came when Gilroy proposed compacting the character arcs and storylines of four seasons into one additional season featuring twelve episodes. This creative shift not only addressed concerns about budgeting and timeline but also promised a richer narrative experience.

Gilroy described this approach as involving “very sexy” time jumps that would highlight significant events spanning four years leading up to the backdrop of Rogue One. Each of the twelve episodes will delve into three-month spans, allowing for focused storytelling while maintaining character development across the narrative’s arc.

Luna articulated the aspirations of the Andor team, saying, “From the beginning, we knew what we wanted to do.” He noted that their initial five-season plan had to be revised in light of practical constraints, including the immense resource investment required for each season. “It takes a lot of energy, time, and money to make one, because each season takes two and a half years of our lives,” he added.

Looking ahead, Luna reflected on the evolution of storytelling in long-format television, recognizing that many contemporary shows often lack a clear vision from inception to conclusion. In contrast, Andor was able to maintain a coherent direction throughout its development, allowing the creators to craft the narrative they envisioned from the outset.

The final season is poised to bring significant developments, and further insights from Luna and the cast are expected as the launch dates approach. Andor season 2 will premiere in the U.S. on April 22, followed by its release in the UK and Australia on April 23.
