Exploring Spokane: A Journey Through Time and Culture
In 1974, Spokane, Washington, hosted a World’s Fair, making it the smallest city ever to do so with the event known as Expo ’74. This unique occasion led to a significant transformation of the city’s dilapidated downtown railyard, which was repurposed into a sprawling 100-acre fairground along the Spokane River. The fairground showcased a variety of attractions, including the first IMAX theater in the U.S., a gondola ride offering stunning views over Spokane Falls, and the historic 1909 Looff Carrousel.
During the fair’s run from May to November, an impressive 5.6 million visitors explored exhibits from ten international countries. Notable displays included a model of Sydney’s iconic Opera House from Australia and a beautifully constructed formal garden by Japan.
Arts and Culture in Spokane
Among Spokane’s cultural landmarks is the Fox Theatre, an exquisite Art Deco structure established in 1931. Once a 2,300-seat cinema, it is now the proud home of the Spokane Symphony, where attendees can immerse themselves in top-tier performances. Following a concert, visitors can enjoy a tasting at the Barrister Winery, a transformed auto warehouse that now offers a selection of Washington’s finest wines, including renowned Cabernet Sauvignon from the Walla Walla Valley.
Dining Experiences
For those seeking an exceptional dining experience, Gander & Ryegrass presents a six-course meal curated by chef Peter Froese. The dishes often reflect Italian culinary influences and can include innovative items such as kohlrabi risotto or pork paired with chanterelles. Alternatively, the Indigenous Eat restaurant offers a unique taste of local cuisine with menu highlights including bison tacos, fry bread, and traditional “three sisters” soup, comprised of corn, squash, and beans.
Vintage Shopping and Local Flavors
Spokane’s vibrant vintage shopping scene is equally captivating. Teleport Vintage & Co. specializes in sourcing an eclectic mix of items, including horsehide-leather jackets, band and sports T-shirts, denim, and camp blankets. Their collection extends beyond the Pacific Northwest to feature selections from Colombia, England, and France. Shoppers can also enjoy a beverage from their fridge stocked with local beers, hard seltzers, and ciders, offering a relaxed atmosphere to peruse unique finds.
Spokane continues to blend its rich history with modern attractions, making it a noteworthy destination for both residents and visitors alike.
