Wendy Williams appears to be on the verge of potentially ending her guardianship after a concerning incident where she dropped a note from her fifth-floor room in a New York City memory care facility. The note, which simply read, “Help! Wendy!!”, prompted someone to call for a wellness check around 11:15 a.m., as reported by the New York Post.
In response to the note, an ambulance was dispatched, and Wendy was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital for an independent assessment of her cognitive abilities, according to TMZ. The situation has also caught the attention of the NYPD and Adult Protective Services, who are investigating Wendy’s current living conditions.
The former talk show host, now 60, has a history of being diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, which led to her transitioning to an assisted living environment. Despite these challenges, Williams has consistently claimed that she is not cognitively impaired and has been actively contesting the court-ordered guardianship.
Wendy Williams Speaks Out: ‘I Am Not Cognitively Impaired’
Wendy is reportedly seeking legal counsel from attorney Joe Tacopina, hoping he will take on her case. In a prior interview with TMZ’s Harvey Levin, she expressed her feelings of isolation, saying, “I am not allowed to go out.” Williams also mentioned that she had only left her room twice in the past month, which raised questions about her treatment and the restrictions placed upon her.
During the exchange, Levin highlighted the stark contrast between Wendy’s reality and that of incarcerated individuals who are afforded time outside, asking her, “Even people who are in prison for murder get an hour a day outside, and you’ve only been outside in fresh air twice in the last 30 days?” To which she confirmed, “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”
Highlighting the difficulties she faces, Wendy stated, “This system has failed from top to bottom regarding this guardianship and everybody involved with that. The system’s failed. I want my freedom back — how about that!”
In further discussions, Billy Bush from “Extra” reflected on Wendy’s situation, suggesting that she is starting to regain her former self. Levin, however, reiterated the challenges Wendy encounters, mentioning that the legal framework surrounding her situation makes it hard for her to reclaim independence. He remarked that she’s dealing with a judge and a guardian who have effectively isolated her from support systems.
Levin also discussed her financial situation, noting that although it is wise for her to have someone manage her finances, that necessity shouldn’t result in her being essentially locked away from the world.
For those interested in deeper insights into Wendy’s ongoing struggle, “TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy” is available to watch on Tubi. Wendy and her niece Alex also made an appearance on “The Breakfast Club” earlier this year, discussing her conservatorship and the conditions of her living situation.
