WGA Awards Nominations Delayed Amid Southern California Wildfires

The nominations for the Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards have been postponed to January 13, 2025, in light of the ongoing wildfires impacting Southern California.

In a collaborative statement released to Variety, representatives from both WGA West and WGA East said, “With Los Angeles under a state of emergency due to multiple wildfires, we will be delaying the announcement of nominees until Monday, Jan. 13, 2025.”

This adjustment follows the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to extend its Oscar nomination voting period by two days. Consequently, the announcement for the 97th Oscar nominations has been moved from January 17 to January 19.

The wildfires have significantly disrupted numerous events across Hollywood, leading to the cancellation of premieres for projects such as Amazon MGM’s “Unstoppable” and Universal’s “Wolf Man.” Additionally, the planned announcement of the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations was canceled, with information instead disseminated via press release.

Moreover, various other high-profile industry events have also faced postponements. The AFI Awards luncheon, originally scheduled for January 10, and the BAFTA Tea Party, set for January 11, have both been delayed. The Critics Choice Awards, which were to take place on January 12 in Santa Monica, has now been reset to January 26.

As these wildfires continue to devastate communities across Southern California, the repercussions on the entertainment sector are increasingly evident. While the decision to reschedule events is rooted in safety, it also highlights the extensive ramifications of this natural disaster on the Los Angeles area.

The WGA Awards celebrate the exceptional work of screenwriters in both film and television. This year’s anticipated nominees are expected to feature some of the top contenders for various prestigious awards, including titles like Neon’s “Anora,” Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown,” and Universal’s “Wicked.”
