Embracing Change: The Colors of 2027
As we look ahead, the next few years promise to be remarkable, marked by significant economic shifts and transformative technological advancements. In response to this dynamic landscape, design trends are evolving, with color playing a pivotal role in how we interpret and engage with our environment. While calming shades like Pantone’s Mocha Mousse offer a moment of respite, the forecasts from consumer design trend forecaster WGSN and their color partner Coloro suggest that by 2027, we will seek vibrant colors that inspire joy and relief from the complexities of modern life. Leading this charge is the striking Luminous Blue, identified as the color of the year for 2027.
Luminous Blue stands out as the most profound of five key hues selected for the year. Alongside it are other lively colors such as Energy Orange and the playful Pop Pink—this latter shade bringing a fresh twist compared to the classic Barbie Pink. The final two colors, Meadowland Green and Clay, anchor in earth tones that reflect a collective desire for a slower, more grounded lifestyle, as well as a return to cherished materials and craftsmanship.
Luminous Blue was meticulously chosen from Coloro’s extensive repository, which encompasses over 3,500 colors.
This captivating shade has emerged as a frontrunner, partly due to its vibrant energy, embodying WGSN’s theme of “interdependency” for 2027. The selection reflects a response to a polarized world, symbolizing connectivity in an age where online and offline realities blur, merging nature with technology. With its deep hues reminiscent of oceanic depths, Luminous Blue offers a rich tapestry of interpretations, adaptable to varying contexts.
“We selected this color for its versatility in bridging the past, present, and future,” explains Gemma Riberti, WGSN’s Director of Interiors. “It resonates with ancient pigment traditions while embracing future innovations, combining the realms of technology and spirituality, all while evoking the beauty of both luminous skies and shadowy depths.”
So, how does this flexible color influence interior design? The WGSN team notes that Luminous Blue is particularly effective in hospitality environments and immersive retail spaces, creating transformative experiences for visitors. Riberti highlights that the color can effectively accentuate products displayed against it, particularly in backlit setups where its inherent luminosity captivates without being overwhelming. The adaptive nature of Luminous Blue allows it to shift its appearance according to lighting, enhancing its glow and versatility.
