In the wake of a significant market downturn, shares of Luminar Technologies (LAZR) plummeted by 37.4% during Wednesday’s trading session, leading to an overall drop of 74% for the year 2024.
The company’s recent quarterly earnings report, released after market hours on Tuesday, revealed disappointing sales and earnings that fell short of analysts’ expectations. This setback, coupled with concerning guidance for future performance, fueled the substantial decline in the stock price, as reported by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Quarterly Results Reflect Struggles
Luminar disclosed a non-GAAP adjusted loss per share of $0.18, which was slightly worse than Wall Street’s average forecast by $0.01. Additionally, the company generated revenues of $16.45 million, representing a year-over-year increase of 1.5%, yet it fell approximately $3.9 million short of analysts’ projections. This marks a continued trend of underwhelming earnings reports for Luminar, and their guidance suggests that these challenges may persist.
Concerns About Future Growth
Looking ahead to the third quarter, Luminar anticipates that sales will at best match or see slight growth compared to the second quarter. Given that recent sales figures already disappointed investors, this lackluster forecast has contributed to increasing skepticism in the market.
Moreover, Luminar’s business trajectory appears to be stagnating, with growing worries over its ability to scale operations effectively. The firm’s profit margins remain disappointing, and with indications that the ramp-up in production is being delayed, there seems to be little optimism for improved profitability in the near future.
