What’s Behind the Fascination with Fisherman Aesthetics?

Exploring the Emerging Fisherman Aesthetic in Coastal Design

As summer unfolds, a surge of captivating coastal interior designs floods my social media feed. This season, however, a distinctive style known as the fisherman aesthetic is capturing attention, steering our admiration away from the typical coastal grandma look that feels more suited to retirement homes. This fresh aesthetic encourages wardrobe staples like cable-knit sweaters, barn coats, and denim overalls, complemented by a collection of iconic boots, boat shoes, and sandals.

This topic brings to mind a recent experience at a pop-up store themed around fishing and hunting, hosted by a streetwear brand, where I, along with friends, sought refuge from the summer heat. Interestingly, it seems many are embracing this fisherman style as part of a new identity, particularly for those who are aging into the forties.

According to the Pinterest Predicts Trend Report for 2025, the fisherman aesthetic is recognized as embodying a “laid-back maritime attitude.” Initially, I overlooked this trend’s potential, but by January, I found my perspective shifting. Sydney Stanback, who leads global trends and insights at Pinterest, suggests that the rise of microtrends like the fisherman aesthetic reflects our efforts to adapt to a new normal in the post-pandemic world.

“Since I began in 2020, we’ve observed a significant transformation in the factors propelling these trends,” Stanback remarks. “While escapism isn’t a new concept, it has evolved in response to our prolonged isolation—something that is far from typical. Even as we move further away from the pandemic, its effects linger.”

One stunning example is a mudroom adorned in Cook’s Blue by Farrow & Ball. The space is complemented by a 1930s Art Deco enameled glass pendant light, a vintage bench covered in Alexander Girard fabric, and plaid rugs sourced from the El Ocotal Weavers.

Stanback and her team’s annual report is meticulously crafted based on real-time consumer behavior observed in Pinterest searches, showcasing interests across generations including Gen Z, millennials, boomers, and Gen X. This data is subsequently refined to help individuals identify diverse and authentic ways to express themselves. Interestingly, there seems to be a growing nostalgia among consumers, perhaps as a response to the uncertainties of the future.

“In recent years, we’ve seen more traditional trends emerge, such as ‘eclectic grandpa,’” Stanback shares. “Fisherman aesthetic is distinctly nautical, yet it allows for personal interpretation and bold expression. When I envision this style in a home, I think of elements like fish nets, earthy tones, and fishing memorabilia, which can all be incorporated in various creative ways.”
