WhatsApp is actively enhancing its platform with the anticipated introduction of customizable chat themes. Recent reports indicate that the messaging service is working towards allowing users to personalize their chat experience by adjusting the colors of chat bubbles and selecting wallpaper backgrounds through predefined themes or their own custom choices. Additionally, WhatsApp is in the process of integrating a feature that enables users to create usernames and set a PIN for increased privacy against unsolicited contacts.

Development of Theme Picker for iOS Users

Recently, feature observer WABetaInfo uncovered that a new theme picker is under development in WhatsApp’s beta version for Android. While this version did not contain any actual theme selections, the beta update for iOS 24.17.10.71 showcases early previews of some themes.

Once the feature is launched, users will be presented with ten preset themes for customization. Screenshots provide a glimpse into the theme picker, revealing two rows of options: the top row features solid color backgrounds, while the bottom row displays nature-inspired themes. Notably, chat bubble colors will correspond to the background color chosen by the user.

As of now, this theme picker remains unavailable for beta testers since it is still being developed. Even users who have installed the latest beta iteration of WhatsApp for iOS via TestFlight cannot access this feature until it is fully prepared for testing. Importantly, these customized themes will be visible only to the individual applying them, contrasting with features found in platforms like Instagram and Messenger, where theme changes are shared among all participants in a chat.

Emerging Username and PIN Feature in WhatsApp Beta

In parallel to theme customization, WhatsApp is also advancing a feature aimed at enhancing user privacy by allowing the establishment of usernames. This approach would enable users to initiate conversations without disclosing their phone numbers. However, the functionality remains in the testing phase and has yet to reach beta testers.

According to WABetaInfo, the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.18.2 reveals a forthcoming “Username PIN” feature. This functionality prompts users to create a PIN after establishing a unique username, providing an additional layer of security. To initiate a conversation using their username, users would need to share this pin with others, thereby allowing control over who may send messages and reducing the likelihood of spam or unwanted communications.

Similar to the theme picker, the Username PIN feature is not yet accessible, even in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android. Both features are expected to be available for beta testing in the near future, prior to their general release for all users.
