What you need to know
WhatsApp is enhancing its chat filtering capabilities by introducing new categories and allowing users to create custom filters. This expansion means users can now choose from the existing All, Unread, Favorites, and Groups filters, as well as their personalized categories. The feature began to roll out last week, with broader accessibility anticipated shortly.
In a recent communication, Meta’s WhatsApp highlighted the new custom filter functionality, which is designed to make message organization and retrieval more efficient for users.
Originally launched earlier this year, the chat filters were aimed at simplifying users’ search and organization processes. The current update marks a significant advancement from the previously available options.

With these enhancements, users can refine their chat experience through categories that may include labels such as neighborhood, work, and friends, or they can choose to craft a completely tailor-made filter. This is a shift from the earlier restrictions that included only All, Unread, Favorites, and Groups categories.
Setting up new filters is described as straightforward. Users can effortlessly access the available filters by swiping down in the “Chats” section, where a new “+” button grants them the ability to create custom categories.
Users can include both group chats and individual conversations in these lists, similar to how the Favorites filter operates. WhatsApp has indicated that any custom categories established by users will appear in the filter bar for easy navigation.
From Thursday, October 31, the option to create new chat lists will be accessible, and WhatsApp has stated that the feature’s broader rollout is expected in the following weeks.
This update follows another recent feature that allows users to discreetly add contacts via WhatsApp Web and on Windows devices as well as Android tablets.
Prior to this, the process for adding new contacts was limited to primary Android or iOS devices, with methods such as entering a phone number or scanning QR codes. The introduction of these new features signifies WhatsApp’s goal to streamline user contact management, potentially enabling users to save contacts using usernames.
Additionally, another notable development is the impending chat memory feature for the Meta AI assistant within the platform. This feature will allow regular users of the AI chatbot to save their preferences, enhancing the level of personalization in their interactions.
