Unexpected Twist on Wheel of Fortune Leaves Contestant Disappointed
A recent episode of Wheel of Fortune showcased a twist of fate that cost contestant Dawya Davis a substantial prize. The Bonus Round proved to be particularly challenging, and the outcome highlighted the often cruel nature of game show puzzles.
Dawya Davis, hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, faced off against Kathy Daley from Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Max Nemoy, a first-year law student from Santa Monica, California, during the game aired on April 28.
Starting strong, Davis won the initial toss-up, adding $2,000 to her score. Despite correctly guessing many letters in the first puzzle, she stumbled when attempting to solve it. The puzzle read “Green around the mills,” but Davis incorrectly submitted “Green around the gills,” allowing Daley to seize the opportunity and claim $5,600.
Daley, an enthusiastic throw pillow aficionado, struggled with the second puzzle, hitting a Bankrupt on her spin. Davis then had the upper hand, but after getting close, she opted to spin again only to face a Lose a Turn. This misstep opened the door for Nemoy, who successfully solved “You’re the apple of my eye shadow” for a total of $10,700.
However, Davis later bounced back by correctly solving the trip puzzle “Cheeses and Chocolates,” winning a vacation to Switzerland and boosting her total to $19,049. Additionally, she nailed two out of three Triple Toss-Ups, earning another $4,000. Despite Nemoy’s attempt to solve the last toss-up incorrectly, Daley swooped in to answer it correctly for an extra $2,000.
In the final segment, Davis solved “I’m not producing my own podcast” for an added $7,500, finishing the game with a commendable total of $30,549 in cash and prizes, while Daley ended up with $4,000 and Nemoy took home $10,700.
When it came time for the Bonus Round, Davis selected “Phrase” as her category. After receiving the standard letters R, S, T, L, N, and E, she opted for M, P, C, and A. Unfortunately, only one letter, “A,” was revealed, resulting in the incomplete puzzle “_ _ N_ _ _ _A_ _E.”
Faced with dwindling time, Davis was unable to guess any words, and the solution, “Kind of Vague,” was unveiled, perfectly encapsulating her limited options.
“Tough to get there without a head start,” remarked host Ryan Seacrest, further emphasizing the difficulty of the round.
Davis ultimately missed out on an additional $40,000, and her Bonus Round performance quickly became a topic of discussion online, with clips circulating on YouTube. Viewers reacted humorously, noting the irony of the puzzle’s elusive nature. Comments ranged from an acknowledgment of the puzzle’s vagueness to expressions of empathy for Davis’s plight.
