Kamal Haasan and Sarika’s Family Legacy
Kamal Haasan and Sarika, who were wed in 1988, share two daughters, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan. The couple navigated a complex relationship that lasted 16 years before they ultimately divorced.
In a revealing interview with Simi Garewal from years ago, Kamal Haasan and Sarika discussed the unique challenges they faced as child actors transitioning into adulthood. Sarika opened up about how her experiences shaped her emotional landscape during her formative years, particularly when performing profound scenes that dealt with loss and trauma.
Reflecting on her early career, Sarika noted how playing heart-wrenching scenes, such as those involving the loss of parents, impacted her emotionally. She described the dissonance of receiving small treats as rewards for these performances, emphasizing the incomprehensible gravity of such situations for a child. “For a normal child, losing parents is traumatic, and is an emotion they aren’t quite prepared for,” Sarika explained. “On the other hand, child actors do these scenes when they are 5 or 6, and are rewarded with a biscuit or chocolate for acing it.” Kamal echoed her sentiments, highlighting that their shared experience in the industry could have led them down very different paths had they not managed to cope with the unique pressures and expectations of early fame.
The two first formed a friendship while filming “Raaj Tilak” in 1984, which eventually blossomed into marriage four years later. Kamal revealed that he was largely unaware of Sarika’s personal difficulties during their early friendship, as she was a recognized star yet facing significant financial hardships in private.
“When I met her, she was a star. Very few people knew where she lived, etc. When I became close to her, I was shocked to see her reality,” Kamal recounted. He admitted that while his admiration for Sarika was sincere, he also felt a sense of sympathy towards her struggles. Sarika, however, emphasized her desire to maintain her dignity despite the challenges she faced, stating, “It was very important to me to hold on to that pride.” She often found it upsetting when well-meaning friends offered assistance, highlighting the complexity of her circumstances.
After years of collaboration and building a family, Kamal and Sarika’s marriage suffered from ongoing challenges, leading to their eventual divorce in 2004. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the intersection between personal and professional lives in the entertainment industry, underscoring the importance of understanding and compassion in the face of adversity.
