Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, daughter of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, chose to stay away from Bollywood, despite her family legacy.
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni’s decision to distance herself from the Bollywood film industry stems from her desire to honor her father Rishi Kapoor’s wishes.
Recently, Riddhima made her first on-screen appearance in Netflix’s “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.” Despite being born into the illustrious Kapoor family, with her brother Ranbir Kapoor establishing a successful acting career, Riddhima opted not to pursue the same path. Neetu Kapoor shared that Riddhima was acutely aware that telling her father about her aspirations to act would cause him distress, shaping her choice to stay away from the acting world.
In his autobiography, “Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored,” Rishi’s concerns are echoed by Neetu, who recounted, “Riddhima grew up knowing that if she ever told her father she wanted to be an actress, he’d kill himself.” While Neetu acknowledged her daughter’s artistic capabilities, she emphasized that Riddhima never voiced any intentions to enter acting due to the potential for upsetting her father.
“She is incredibly talented and charming. She could have easily made her mark in acting. However, even as a child, she was sensitive to how much it would hurt her father if she chose to pursue that career. It’s not that he holds negative views about actresses; he just possesses a protective nature towards his family. Riddhima understood his concerns deeply and decided against acting to maintain his peace. She expressed a preference for studying fashion design instead,” Neetu explained.
Historically, women in the Kapoor family have tended to remain out of the public eye. Influenced by this tradition, figures like Raj Kapoor’s daughters and daughters-in-law distanced themselves from cinema upon marriage. However, a shift occurred with Babita, who inspired her daughters, Karisma and Kareena, to pursue their dreams in Bollywood.
Neetu, who abandoned her own acting career at the young age of 21, noted that Rishi was particularly worried about the “dark side of fame” and did not want Riddhima exposed to public scrutiny regarding her private life. “Rishi was apprehensive about these negative aspects of celebrity life and wanted to protect our daughter from the potential turbulence it could bring. This concern lingered throughout her formative years until her marriage to Bharat. Once she was settled, it alleviated some of his worries and allowed their relationship to flourish,” she detailed.
Today, Riddhima has emerged as a public figure through her influence on social media. On the Netflix series, she shared her daughter’s aspirations of becoming an actress, indicating that the dreams of performing have not completely left the Kapoor lineage.
