Upcoming Announcement for the 2024 Gotham Awards Nominations
As the awards season approaches, all eyes are on the Gotham Awards, which will announce its nominees on Tuesday at noon Eastern Time. This annual ceremony, organized by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, is often recognized as the kickoff event for the awards season.
Scheduled for December 2, the Gotham Awards precede nominations from various critics groups, including the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle. This timing positions the Gothams at the forefront of the season’s festivities.
Now in its 34th edition, the Gotham Awards selects its nominees through committees composed of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and curators. The winners, however, are determined by separate juries made up of industry professionals, including directors, actors, producers, and editors, all of whom are deeply involved in the film-making process.
The awards’ unique structure, which places a significant emphasis on independent cinema, often leads to surprising nominees. For instance, in the best feature category last year, notable entries included the eventual winner, “Past Lives,” alongside contenders such as “Passages,” “Reality,” “Showing Up,” and “A Thousand and One.” In a further display of this eclectic taste, the best performer category showcased the talents of Jeffrey Wright for his role in “American Fiction” while awarding Lily Gladstone for her performance in the indie film “The Unknown Country.”
The upcoming nominations will be announced across several categories, including:
- Breakthrough Performer
- Outstanding Supporting Performance
- Outstanding Lead Performance
- Breakthrough Director
- Best Screenplay
- Best Director
- Best Documentary Feature
- Best International Feature
- Best Feature
While the Gotham Awards are known for championing independent films, they also acknowledge high-profile titles that have significant awards potential. Last year, films such as “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Maestro” were honored with tribute awards. This year, two notable designations have already been announced: Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” is set to receive the Ensemble Tribute, and celebrated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will be honored with The Gotham Director Tribute for his work on “Dune: Part Two.”
As anticipation builds, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts alike will be eager to see which films and performances are recognized in what has become a pivotal part of the awards calendar.
