A notable theater chain is set to present special screenings of A Minecraft Movie: Chicken Jockey this weekend, spurred by a trending phenomenon on TikTok.
This film adaptation of the immensely popular video game crafted by Mojang Studios features Jack Black in the role of Steve, an aspiring miner who unexpectedly discovers a portal within a mine that leads to the Overworld—a vibrant world where he has the ability to create anything he envisions using blocks. In this unique realm, Steve encounters various block-shaped entities, including the Piglin warriors who aim to misuse a luminous cube Steve unearths for their own sinister plans.
Fortunately for Steve, who finds himself in captivity with the Piglins, a group of four disparate friends—Garrett (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—stumbles upon the portal and crosses over to assist him in thwarting impending chaos.
A standout moment from the film occurs when a zombie-like creature rides a chicken in a humorous confrontation set in a wrestling ring, becoming known as the “Chicken Jockey” scene. This particular scene has ignited a frenzy on TikTok, where audiences are seen celebrating by tossing popcorn and snacks into the air. One viral clip captured an audience member who brought a live chicken into the theater and lifted it above them during a notable scene.
However, not all the excitement has been positive; some theaters have reported incidents of disorder during these lively screenings, prompting law enforcement to intervene to manage the situation.
In response to the heightened fan excitement, Regal Cinemas is planning to host exclusive “Chicken Jockey” screenings on Easter Sunday across its 4DX screens. This chain, which operates 420 theaters featuring a total of 5,664 screens in 41 states, made the announcement via X, inviting audiences to dress as their favorite Minecraft characters and join in the festive atmosphere.
For those interested, the associated X post includes details directing fans to find locations and showtimes for the Regal Cinema’s “Chicken Jockey” screenings, which are presented in an immersive 4DX format designed to engage audiences more fully with physical effects.
Box Office Outlook for ‘A Minecraft Movie’
Following a strong showing in its second weekend with a domestic gross of $78.5 million—on top of a remarkable $163 million debut—the film is poised for another successful weekend at the box office. As it faces competition from the vampire thriller Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and featuring Michael B. Jordan, many industry analysts anticipate that A Minecraft Movie might maintain its position at the top of North American charts, projecting earnings of between $35 million and $47 million during its third weekend.
Contrarily, only one industry publication, Variety, is betting on Sinners to outperform, estimating the horror film could earn $45 million to $50 million in its opening. In contrast, they predict A Minecraft Movie could see receipts from $40 million to $45 million. Notably, both films are produced by Warner Bros.
As of Wednesday, A Minecraft Movie has amassed a total of $296.7 million domestically and $273.3 million internationally, culminating in a worldwide box office figure of $570 million against a production budget of $150 million, excluding marketing costs.
Regal Cinema’s special A Minecraft Movie “Chicken Jockey” screenings in 4DX are scheduled for Easter Sunday.
