Louise Explosion Prompted Shelter-in-Place Alert

An explosion occurred at a manufacturing facility located on Payne Street in the Clifton neighborhood of Louisville on Tuesday afternoon. The incident led local officials to respond proactively, issuing a shelter-in-place order that affected a one-mile radius surrounding the site of the blast.

The shelter-in-place order was activated shortly after the explosion and was eventually lifted around 4:30 p.m. It encompassed several busy areas in Louisville, impacting neighborhoods such as Clifton, Irish Hill, Cherokee Triangle, Original Highlands, and Butchertown. This area also covered prominent roads including Baxter Avenue, Bardstown Road, and Frankfort Avenue.

Multiple schools were included in the affected zone. Students at Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary and Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts School were required to shelter in place as a precaution but were allowed to dismiss shortly before 4 p.m., according to local reports.

Eyewitnesses described the force of the explosion, noting that many buildings and businesses in the northern part of the radius felt the impact. Notably, Osaka Sushi Bar suffered blown-out windows due to the blast. Other businesses within the area affected included Enso, Witches Brew Coffee, Morning Fork, The Mellwood Tavern, Chik’n & Mi, and Mom’s Music Store. The eastern section of the radius was home to Volare, the Kroger on Brownsboro Road, and Gallant Fox Brewing.

Additional notable locations in the impacted area included the Mellwood Art Center, Headliners Music Hall, and Cave Hill Cemetery, as well as a portion of Cherokee Park near the golf course.

Residents reported shaking in their homes, and in several cases, windows were shattered as a result of the explosion’s force.
