Where to Taste Columbus-Style Pizza in Ohio

Having resided in Columbus for over 35 years, I’ve enjoyed square-cut pizzas topped generously and slathered with sweet sauce, all without realizing it was a unique style. It turns out many locals share my oversight; numerous interviews revealed that most people didn’t recognize they were creating Columbus-style pizza until it was pointed out to them.

The local pizza scene has been noted by author Jim Ellison, who emphasizes that Columbus-style pizza features a thin crust, toppings that extend edge-to-edge, and is often presented in squares or rectangles. His book, “Columbus Pizza: A Slice of History,” released in 2020, delves into how the city emerged as a significant player in the national pizza landscape. Notably, some of Ohio’s oldest family-operated eateries are pizzerias, and in the 1990s, Columbus boasted the highest number of pizzerias per capita across the United States.

Today, iconic establishments like Donatos and Massey’s continue the legacy, while new pizzerias contribute their perspectives. In 2022, Experience Columbus introduced the Columbus-Style Pizza Trail, encouraging residents and visitors to explore various pizzas throughout the area. Their slogan, “It’s hip to be square,” invites pizza lovers to collect points, earn rewards, and indulge in plenty of pizza.

Below is an overview of several notable pizzerias in the Columbus area, some associated with the pizza trail and others that represent hidden gems. Each establishment offers a unique approach to a pizza style that is finally gaining well-deserved recognition.

Terita’s Pizza

Opened in 1959, this North Linden classic was founded by Gus Iannarino and is now operated by his son, Tom. Known for its thin, square-cut pizzas, Terita’s features toppings such as capicola, mushrooms, jalapeños, and a standout housemade sausage. Longtime employee James Midlick mentions that everything, including the dough and sausage, is made in-house. Lines start forming by 4 p.m. on Fridays, and they often keep the conveyor oven running late into the evening. In 2024, The Columbus Dispatch recognized Terita’s as the top pizza spot in Columbus, celebrating 65 years of consistent quality.

Rubino’s Pizza

When you step into Rubino’s in Bexley, it feels like a step back to 1954. With retro elements like a black rotary phone and handwritten orders on yellow pads, it offers a nostalgic experience. Third-generation owner Julie Wilhelm describes their thin-crust pizzas as coming straight from stone-deck Blodgett ovens, preserving a crunchy crust thanks to classic bagging. The menu features traditional toppings, including a local favorite, the pickle pie, all framed by a vintage ambiance.

Panzera’s

Since 1964, this Grandview Heights pizzeria has served straightforward, square-cut pizzas based on traditional recipes for dough, sauce, and provolone cheese. Carlo Lombardi, nephew of owner Nick Panzera, emphasizes the simplicity of their offerings: “It’s just classic pizza. That’s it.” The Freddy Special salad, loaded with an assortment of meats and tomatoes, pays homage to Lombardi’s father. On nights when the Grandview Hop occurs, Panzera’s often sees a packed house, maintaining the beloved party cut for communal enjoyment.

JT’s Pizza & Pub

At JT’s locations in Grandview Heights and Linworth, traditional recipes blend with innovation. Owner Joe Hartnett, who grew up enjoying local pizzas, serves crispy, square-cut versions topped with a mix of provolone and mozzarella, finished with a hint of sweetness. Their specialties include the Founder’s Favorite, featuring an array of toppings, and the Big Al, named after Hartnett’s father. Monthly specials like the Porky Mac and Cheese keep the menu exciting. After being voted the best pizza by a local Facebook group for two consecutive years, JT’s has become a prominent stop on the pizza trail.

The Original Josie’s Pizza

A staple in Franklinton since 1959, The Original Josie’s Pizza still utilizes the same brick ovens that founder Kelly Catalfina used. The result is a crisp, square-cut pizza with a chewy crust, complemented by slow-simmered sauce and well-melted provolone that seeps into the edges. According to fourth-generation family member Austin Catalfina, they place pepperoni beneath the cheese for added flavor. Everything is made in-house, from the meticulously proofed dough to the freshly ground sausage. Many dedicated customers return to The Original Josie’s Pizza for its authentic taste, with some even choosing to hold wedding receptions there.

Gatto’s

Having been serving Columbus-style pies since 1952, this Clintonville favorite is owned by Tony DeRubertis, who grew up enjoying Gatto’s and took over in 2019. He considers himself “a custodian of the place.” The pizzas boast a satisfying crunch, featuring savory sauce and housemade sausage sliced in traditional sheets. Their blend of provolone and mozzarella, along with crispy local Esposito pepperoni, creates standout flavors. DeRubertis emphasizes the importance of the texture, stating, “You should hear the cut and feel the crunch.” This establishment exemplifies the value of preserving culinary history.

TAT Ristorante di Famiglia

TAT has been a pioneer in introducing pizza to Columbus since 1934. Nearly a century later, the Corrova family remains at the helm, with sisters Marianne and Michelle, granddaughters of founder Pete Corrova, continuing the tradition. They craft signature pies in a deck oven that Michelle fiercely guards. Families gather here for classic red-sauce dishes and perfectly square-cut pizzas. With portraits honoring past generations adorning the walls and a camaraderie among loyal regulars, TAT stands as a vital part of the city’s rich pizza history.
