U.S. President Donald Trump is poised to announce new tariffs that will become effective immediately after their disclosure on Wednesday, as confirmed by the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt informed reporters on Tuesday, stating, “My understanding is that the tariff announcement will come tomorrow. They will be effective immediately.” She highlighted that Trump has been hinting at this announcement for some time, particularly framing April 2 as a significant day for the nation.
Trump has announced plans to implement “reciprocal tariffs,” indicating that countries imposing their own tariffs on American exports could soon encounter new regulations affecting their goods. He described this initiative as a major policy move, asserting it would affect “all countries.”
Despite the anticipation, several details surrounding the proposed tariffs—including their extent, impact, and calculation methods—remain unspecified.
Leavitt mentioned that Trump has decided on the tariff levels and is working closely with his trade team to finalize the details, emphasizing the importance of the announcement for American workers. “I don’t want to get ahead of the President. This is obviously a very big day,” she said, assuring reporters they would learn more in approximately 24 hours.
In conjunction with the tariff announcement, the White House disclosed that Trump will address attendees at a “Make America Wealthy Again Event” scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET in the Rose Garden.
This latest initiative on reciprocal tariffs will follow a series of import duties introduced since Trump took office in January, which have included significant tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico, as well as specific industry tariffs affecting metals and recently, tariffs on imported vehicles.
The tariffs on automobiles, described as “permanent” by Trump, are expected to take effect on Thursday, following his announcement made last week.
