Whitmer Claims Polls Indicating Harris’ Lead in Michigan Are ‘Not Accurate’

Michigan’s Political Landscape: A Close Race Ahead

In the battleground state of Michigan, former President Donald Trump secured victory in 2016, before President Joe Biden turned the tide back to the Democratic Party in 2020. Current polling data indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris holds a modest lead over Trump, suggesting a potentially favorable outlook for her campaign.

However, Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who is serving her second term and plays a key role as co-chair of Harris’ presidential campaign, has expressed skepticism about the optimistic polling forecasts.

During a recent discussion at the Texas Tribune Festival, Whitmer articulated her belief in Harris’ potential to win Michigan in the upcoming election but warned that the contest may be more competitive than recent surveys suggest. She referenced a CNN/SSRS poll that showed Harris leading Trump by a margin of 48% to 43%.

Whitmer stated, “It makes me nervous to see any poll that says there’s a five-point lead for Kamala Harris in Michigan right now. It’s just not true.” She emphasized that while she is confident about the potential for a Democratic victory in Michigan, the race will be closely contested.

Historically, Democratic candidates have enjoyed a stronghold in Michigan, winning the state in every presidential election from 1992 to 2012. However, Trump’s triumph in 2016 was fueled by his appeal to working-class and union members, traditionally a vital segment of the Democratic voter base. Many of these voters, who supported Biden in 2020, remain undecided as the November election approaches.

In recent weeks, Trump has made appearances in Michigan, actively seeking endorsements from union leaders. Whitmer highlighted the significance of Michigan, describing it as a “microcosm” of the nation and underscored the importance of voter engagement in the state.

“As we see these polls, I’m telling everyone, don’t get comfortable,” Whitmer cautioned. “You cannot sleep on Michigan.”
