Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron are set to clash once again in a highly anticipated rematch on April 20. The bout will serve as the main event of an exciting boxing night on Easter Sunday, broadcast live on Sky Sports. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming fight.
When is it and where to watch it?
The rematch between Whittaker and Cameron will take place at the bp pulse LIVE arena in Birmingham on Sunday night. Their first encounter was held in October of last year, ending in a technical draw after both fighters fell out of the ring in the fifth round.
Viewers can tune in to watch the fight live on Sky Sports Action starting at 7pm, with Sky Sports Main Event joining the coverage at 8pm.
What happened in the first fight?
Whittaker and Cameron originally faced off in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 12. During the fifth round, both fighters got entangled and fell over the ropes onto the ring apron. Due to injuries sustained in the fall, Whittaker was unable to continue, requiring him to exit the arena in a wheelchair.
The fight was subsequently decided on the judges’ scorecards, with two judges scoring it 58-57 for each fighter and a third scoring it 58-58, resulting in a split-decision technical draw. Cameron, who was the underdog going into the bout, later claimed that Whittaker was “looking for a way out” during the fight.
Who else is on the card?
Boxing fans can expect a thrilling night on the Easter Sunday card. Frazier Clarke will aim to bounce back from a brutal first-round knockout against Fabio Wardley, facing Ghana’s Ebenezer Tetteh, who recently lost to Dillian Whyte. Additionally, Lee Cutler will look to extend his momentum while going up against Sam Eggington in what promises to be an exhilarating match.
Former European champion Tyler Denny will also be in action, taking on the tenacious “Soldier,” Elvis Ahorgah. The full lineup for the evening includes:
- Ben Whittaker vs Liam Cameron 2
- Lee Cutler vs Sam Eggington
- Frazier Clarke vs Ebenezer Tetteh
- Tyler Denny vs Elvis Ahorgah
- Troy Coleman vs Bradley Goldsmith (Midlands Area title)
How many rounds is Whittaker-Cameron 2?
The rematch between Whittaker and Cameron was originally expected to mirror their first fight with ten rounds. However, Cameron has confirmed that he has agreed to a 12-round contest. A representative for BOXXER, Whittaker’s promoter, commented on the situation, stating, “The situation is being resolved, and we look forward to one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in recent history live from the bp pulse arena in Birmingham on Easter Sunday.” Cameron’s promoter, Queensberry, expressed frustration over the issue but remains open to a resolution.
What they say?
What could be next?
The rematch heralds a significant week for boxing, with Chris Eubank Jr. facing Conor Benn on April 26, live on Sky Sports Box Office, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Anthony Yarde is also scheduled to finalize a trilogy with Lyndon Arthur on that undercard, which is particularly notable since Arthur has previously defeated Cameron. A victory for Yarde could position him for a world title fight, and he has indicated interest in facing Whittaker in the future. Joshua Buatsi, returning after a loss to Callum Smith, mentioned he is available for a match against Whittaker or Cameron.
