New Reality Show Got to Get Out Premieres on Hulu

Hulu recently launched a competitive reality show titled Got to Get Out, airing all episodes of its inaugural season on April 11. The series features a mix of nine familiar faces from the realm of reality television alongside 11 newcomers, all vying for a hefty prize of $1 million.

The concept of the show revolves around a tense, 10-day retreat in a mansion where every second contributes to the prize pool, incrementing the total by one dollar. Contestants are presented with various exit strategies, enabling them to escape when the cash amount reaches specific thresholds. Players who successfully leave claim the money accumulated at the moment of their departure, while those remaining must restart the bank from zero.

However, escaping the confines of the mansion proves challenging. Contestants must navigate a long stretch to the exit, and if anyone notices a player attempting to flee, they can activate a mechanism to close the gates, keeping the escapee trapped inside.

In a pivotal moment during Episode 5, contestants Cynthia Bailey and Stein Retzlaff successfully executed their exit plan. Cynthia, who had been designated the role of “button watcher,” remained vigilant on a couch, monitoring the escape button while devising an actual escape strategy in secret. This allowed Stein to make a break for it, escaping with $312,060 in the pot at the time. The duo decided to equally share their winnings, each taking home $156,030 and leaving the competition ahead of schedule.

As the competition proceeded, the pressure of being away from home intensified for some participants, leading Clare Crawley and Jill Ashlock to exit during Episode 6. This left 16 competitors still in the running for the prize, which could potentially grow to $687,940.

By the time the finale approached, the stakes escalated. Contestants faced boarded windows to thwart escapes and a new rule penalized players for erratic button-pushing. Anyone hitting the button without someone actively escaping was subject to a 30-minute confinement in a large birdcage.

In a dramatic final episode, Spencer Pratt initiated the first exit strategy at the $625,000 mark, enlisting the help of Val Chmerkovskiy, Steven Giannopoulos, and Rob Roman. Val was selected to make the dash for freedom while Rob kept watch from an elevated position. Spencer aimed to create distractions below to help Val escape through a narrowly uncovered window. However, Rashad Jennings, stationed nearby, was quick to react, pressing the button just in time to prevent Val’s escape.

Lindsey Coffey then attempted her exit strategy at $632,000, bringing Shane Dougherty into her plan. With trust being a critical factor, they also informed Steve Helling, who was not reliable earlier in the game. Steve fabricated a story about having an advantage that would disable the watchtower’s warning lever briefly, hoping to be included in their plans. Unfortunately for Lindsey and Shane, his trickery resulted in a missed opportunity, leading to their capture.

The final exit strategy belonged to Athena Vas at $638,000. Despite recent conflicts with her fellow contestant, Nick “Doodles” Metzler, she chose to collaborate with him. Doodles possessed a genuine advantage that genuinely disabled watchtower surveillance for eight minutes, allowing him to attempt an escape. Unaware of Steve’s true character, they invited him into their scheme. However, as Doodles made his run, Steve’s mistrust drove him to sabotage their efforts by closing the exit, choosing to share the winnings with all remaining players instead.

Ultimately, the remaining contestants divided the prize pool of $687,940, with each player walking away with $42,996. The final participants included Spencer, Kim, Val, Demi, Susan, Omarosa Manigault, Rashad, Doodles, Athena V., Lindsey, Shane, Steven, Rob, Steve, Yahné Coleman, and Athena Suich.

Got to Get Out Season 1 is currently streaming on Hulu.
