Why Boston Blue Should Kick Off Blue Bloods Fridays

CBS currently showcases the FBI series on Tuesdays, raising the question of why it hasn’t granted a similar night to Blue Bloods on Fridays.

The trend of dedicating entire nights to specific franchises can be frustrating, especially considering the successful lineups established by networks like CBS and NBC, such as the One Chicago series on Wednesdays.

Nevertheless, if any program deserves its own evening, it’s Blue Bloods alongside potential spinoffs. After CBS’s earlier decision to cancel the show during its peak, providing viewers with several spinoffs would be a fitting acknowledgment of audience loyalty.

The Missed Opportunity for Spinoffs Before Cancellation

The decision-making by CBS regarding spinoffs during the last season of Blue Bloods seems particularly misguided.

It’s hard to comprehend the rationale behind canceling a show with such a devoted fan base. Introducing a spinoff while the main series approached its finale could have provided a comforting transition for viewers facing the end of the original.

Last season, due to the disruptions caused by the writers’ strike, it may not have been feasible to launch a new series. However, pairing a spinoff with the final eight episodes of Blue Bloods could have eased the transition for fans and allowed for character development alongside the original storyline.

Instead of following through with this strategy, CBS opted to replace Blue Bloods with the show S.W.A.T, implying that any police procedural would suffice, given the popularity of crime dramas.

The Appeal of Multiple Spinoffs

The success of Blue Bloods stemmed not merely from its action-packed policing narratives but rather from its rich family dynamics—elements that contemporary television often overlooks.

Despite CBS’s cancellation claims due to production costs, the introduction of multiple spinoffs could revive the experience fans cherished about Blue Bloods and maintain its legacy.

Currently, CBS has brought forth one spinoff titled Boston Blue, which promises to take Danny out of the Reagan family context, positioning him into the narrative of another cop family in Boston.

However, imagine the possibilities if there were two additional spinoffs airing alongside Boston Blue, such as:

  • Jamie and Eddie adapting to life as new parents within the Nassau County Police.
  • A prequel series centered on a younger Frank Reagan while his father serves as Police Commissioner, exploring his early challenges and triumphs.

Such a lineup would allow for seamless continuity and development of the narrative, giving fans a satisfying glimpse into the lives of the Reagans post-finale.

Challenges of a Blue Bloods-Focused Night

For this vision to become reality, some existing shows would need to be rescheduled or potentially cut from the roster.

While some may view this as petty, it’s a natural reaction to CBS’s past dismissal of a beloved series that had consistently performed well in ratings.

The crux of the matter extends beyond mere scheduling—it’s about the plethora of possible spinoff concepts. From Erin’s perspective as a prosecutor tackling challenging cases to Joe Hill’s character development, even exploring Henry’s later years as he engages with the police community, the creative avenues are vast.

One can only dream of a dedicated channel focusing solely on Blue Bloods spinoffs and reruns, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the captivating universe CBS has created.

We invite Blue Bloods enthusiasts to share their thoughts on the prospect of a dedicated Blue Bloods night. What spinoffs would you like to see? Join the conversation and vote in our poll.

All 14 seasons of Blue Bloods are currently available for streaming on Paramount+. Boston Blue is slated to premiere on CBS during the 2026-2027 TV season.
