Cate Blanchett Reflects on Her Unique Wedding Experience
Cate Blanchett and her spouse, Andrew Upton, opted for a more understated wedding compared to the extravagant ceremonies typically associated with Hollywood. Their marriage, which occurred 27 years ago, involved some budget constraints that have left a lasting impression on Blanchett, notably because they possess only one photograph from their 1997 wedding.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on March 13, while promoting her forthcoming thriller Black Bag, Blanchett described her long-lasting relationship with Upton as “a miracle.” The conversation naturally shifted to the reason behind their lack of wedding photos.
“When we got married, we had absolutely no money. We couldn’t hire a photographer, so we relied on two friends who were photographers,” Blanchett recounted. “One got so drunk that he forgot to load film into the camera, and the other was having such a good time that he didn’t take any pictures. Consequently, we only have one image from our wedding.”
Blanchett described that single image as “a blurry picture of the two of us getting in the car,” noting, “But I really remember the night as a result.”
Reflecting on her initial disappointment regarding the absence of photos, Blanchett shared, “I was very sad and upset; I wept at the time for not having any pictures. However, in the end, I’m sort of pleased we don’t have any, because it prompts me to continuously recall the evening.”
In a 1999 interview with Vanity Fair, Blanchett referred to Upton as “one of the few grounded people I know whose head is in the stars,” appreciating his unique balance between ambition and reality. Interestingly, Blanchett admitted that she initially did not take a liking to him.
“He thought I was aloof, while I perceived him as arrogant. It just shows how wrong first impressions can be,” she remarked. “But once he kissed me, that was that.” The couple moved swiftly, tying the knot just 21 days after they began dating. Today, they are proud parents to four children: three sons—Dashiell, Roman, and Ignatius—and a daughter, Edith.
