Hollywood Stars Seek New Horizons: A Trend in Celebrity Relocations

Is a significant departure of celebrities from Hollywood underway? While many prominent figures continue to frequent Los Angeles, several notable names, including Eva Longoria and Richard Gere, have chosen to leave the United States. The trend appears to be gaining momentum as yet another prominent personality is making international moves.

Ellen DeGeneres and her spouse, Portia de Rossi, have reportedly made the decision to relocate outside of the United States in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s victory in the recent presidential election. Sources informed TMZ that the couple felt compelled to “get the hell out” shortly after Trump’s electoral success over Vice President Kamala Harris.

The couple expressed a sense of disillusionment with the election results, prompting their relocation to the picturesque Cotswolds District in South West England, just two hours from London. Prior to the 2024 election, they reportedly purchased a home in the UK, indicating a well-planned move.

Having tied the knot in 2008, DeGeneres and de Rossi are now said to be preparing to sell their residence in Montecito, California, although neither has publicly addressed this transition.

DeGeneres has long been an outspoken advocate for political causes, particularly her support for Kamala Harris leading up to the election, having donated $3,300 to her campaign. In August, she shared an enthusiastic post featuring the Democratic nominee, declaring, “There’s nothing more powerful than a woman whose time has come!! I can’t wait for @KamalaHarris to be our next president.”

In a show of solidarity for women’s rights, DeGeneres also posted a video compilation earlier this month made by The Seneca Project, emphasizing the importance of voting, stating, “Let’s vote like our lives depend on it. Because they do!”

This shift in residence comes amidst other significant exits in the entertainment industry. In a recent interview with Marie Claire, Longoria discussed her choice to leave Los Angeles alongside her husband, José Bastón, and their young son, Santiago.

Longoria reflected on her circumstances, saying, “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”

Separately, Richard Gere has also relinquished his Connecticut home in preparation for an overseas move, but his motivations were less about politics and more focused on family ties. In an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, Gere revealed his desire to relocate to Spain to allow his wife, Alejandra Silva, to be closer to her family.

As these celebrities seek new beginnings abroad, it raises the question of whether more stars will follow in their footsteps. Only time will tell if this trend continues to escalate.
