Harrison Ford’s Awards Journey with “Shrinking”
The premiere of Apple TV+’s comedy series Shrinking in January 2023 marked a pivotal moment for Harrison Ford, as many anticipated it would lead to his first Emmy nomination. Known predominantly as a legendary film actor, Ford’s venture into television was seen as a potential game-changer. Heading into the nominations, he was positioned fifth in Gold Derby’s rankings for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. However, in an unexpected twist, Ford did not receive a nomination, while his co-stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams were recognized instead. Following a successful first season, the series returned for a second season in October 2023, priming both Ford and the show for renewed recognition.
In Shrinking, Ford portrays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a therapist collaborating with Segel’s character, Jimmy Laird. His performance garnered accolades during the show’s first season, including nominations at the Critics Choice Awards and the Television Critics Association Awards. The second season, however, has seen Ford and the show enjoying a surge of new accolades. At the Golden Globes, both Segel and Ford received nominations, a significant growth from the previous season’s recognition. Additionally, Shrinking has been listed among the American Film Institute’s top ten TV programs for 2024.
Ford’s recognition continued at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, where Shrinking received nominations for both its ensemble cast and Ford’s individual performance. The SAG Awards, which rely on votes from peers in the industry, are particularly noteworthy since they consolidate lead and supporting performances into one category for comedy. In a competitive field, Ford was the only supporting actor nominated alongside lead actors such as Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), showcasing his significant achievement.
This momentum heading into Emmy season positions Shrinking favorably, as it ranks fifth in Gold Derby’s odds for Best Comedy Series. With eight spots available in that category, it appears likely to secure its first nomination. Both Segel and Williams are also strong contenders for repeat nominations. Ford is currently in a competitive position for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, ranking second, with Michael Urie following closely in fourth after a recent Critics Choice Award victory. Also vying for a nod is Brett Goldstein, a two-time Emmy winner for Ted Lasso, who joined the cast in Season 2 and is positioned in seventh place.
The possibility of Ford clinching the award remains intriguing. Although the current frontrunner is two-time defending champion Ebon Moss-Bachrach from The Bear, forecasts suggest that its decline in critical acclaim this season may open the door for new contenders. Notably, there seems to be a growing sentiment against the categorization of The Bear as a comedy, which may affect its standing in this award cycle. Surveys of experts indicate that three out of ten predict Ford could take home the award, while four out of ten Gold Derby editors believe he stands a good chance. Nonetheless, securing the nomination remains a critical hurdle; the events of 2023 demonstrated that a star’s legacy is not always enough to guarantee recognition. With Shrinking on the rise, Harrison Ford appears well-poised to benefit from its success.
